LAWSUIT IN HOUSE EXPLOSION FILED IN MADISON COUNTY

A house explosion in Carlinville has lead to a Negligence lawsuit.  Although Carlinville is in Macoupin County, the lawsuit has been filed in Madison County.  Tammy Pocklington, Special Administrator of the Estate of Margaret Hatlen, Coady Hatlen, Michael Albracht, and Edwin Hatlen, filed suit on August the 14th against AmerenIP and Area Heating and Air Conditioning, LTD.  Hatlen, her son Coady and her grandson Michael died when their house exploded on August 2, 2006, her other son Edwin was injured and hospitalized.  The police suspect the cause of the explosion was natural gas.  The suit claims that AmerenIP failed to properly inspect the house to prevent gas leaks, failed to odorize the natural gas, and ran natural gas through gas lines at the home at an excessive pressure.  The suit also accuses Area Heating and Air Conditioning of improperly installing a water heater and failing to properly inspect gas appliances in the home.
