BRIDGEWORK AND AUDIT REPORT DISCUSSED AT BOND COUNTY BOARD MEETING

Mike McCormick, Bond County Highway Engineer, requested from the Bond County Board aid for bridgework.  The board approved $13,306 in funds to repair a bridge in Pocahontas and $19,000 in funds to replace a bridge in Mulberry Grove.  The highway engineer's salary, which is co-funded by the state and county, was also given the ok.  The board then approved a request from Robert Lindberg, with FAYCO Enterprises, for a $25,757 renewal in funding for everyday operating expenses.  Lindberg said 28% of their clients are from Bond County.  West & Company presented the board with last year's 74-page audit report stating the county was ahead in net assets at the end of last year.  However, due to a couple departments currently short on revenue and over on expenses, the county won't end this year as high as expected.  The next budget meeting is next Thursday, September 13th at 7:00 p.m.

The Board voted in favor of the use of the courthouse lawn by the Greenville High School Pep Club for a dunking tank at the September 14th Homecoming Snake Dance.  They also voted to allow The VFW Auxiliary to use the lawn the same day for a POW/MIA ceremony.  And The Comet's Sports Booster Club was given permission to use the courthouse grounds on September 15th for the Homecoming Cookout.  The final business at hand was the release of the minutes of the February 21st closed session; which was unanimously approved. 

POLICE INVESTIGATING SECOND ARSON ATTEMPT

Greenville police are investigating a second attempt to burn a shed on the Friendly City lot.  Early Monday morning a customer at the bank ATM across the street noticed a smell of smoke and saw the small fire.  The Greenville Fire Protection District responded to the scene.  The investigating officer told WGEL that damage was minimal.  This is the second time in recent weeks that someone has attempted to set the storage shed on fire.  It is owned by Marten Portable Buildings of Stonefort, Illinois and is a demo model.  Police believe the two incidents are connected. 


TRUCK STOLEN FROM PARKING LOT

Sheriff's deputies are looking into the theft of a commercial truck from the Powhatan parking lot.  The truck, driven by Scott Kuhn of Breese, was hauling a load of oil dry when it was stolen.  The theft was reported to the Sheriff's Department Monday night. 

RELAY COMING SOON

The 2006 Bond County Relay for Life is about a week-and-a-half-away and final preparations are being made.  The colors of the rainbow will be utilized for this year’s theme of “The Groovy 70’s.”  There are fourteen teams registered for the event which begins Friday September 15 at the Bond County Fairgrounds.  The next team captain’s meeting is Thursday (9/7) at 6pm at the First Christian Church Family Life Center.  Captains will pick up T-shirts, the Relay schedule, and other information their teams will need. 

Last year’s Relay for Life generated $63,300.  The Relay is a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society. 

RYAN SENTENCING TODAY

The sentencing for former Illinois Governor George Ryan is slated for Wednesday.  Federal prosecutors are recommending a longer sentence than the six-and-a-half years given to his aide, Scott Fawell.  Ryan, who was found guilty in April on 22 counts of corruption, will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer.  The U.S. Probation Office says the former governor’s sentence should be between eight and ten years, while defense attorneys are calling for a maximum of 30 months.

RACING TICKETS INFO

OBITUARIES

WANDA S. BONE

49-year-old Wanda S. Bone of Pocahontas passed away Monday evening at her home.  Family Graveside services for 49-year-old Wanda S. Bone will be held at a later date in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Thursday September 7th from
6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home.  For those who desire memorials may be made to the family.
