COMETS PLAY SATURDAY IN DUQUOIN

 

The undefeated Greenville High School Comets Football team will play the DuQuion Indians, this coming Saturday, November 3^rd, at 1:00 PM, at DuQuoin.  The Comets' record is now 10 - 0, following their victory over Flora this past Friday.  The DuQuoin Indians have a record of 8 - 2.  You can hear the play by play live on WGEL Radio, 101.7FM. U.S. HOUSE PASSES SCHIP

 

The United State House of Representatives recently voted to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), a plan which supports state efforts to make sure children have access to the healthcare they need.

 

Governor Blagojevich commended members of Congress for not giving up the fight to save SCHIP.  The Governor said, "Illinois became the first state in the nation to ensure that all kids have access to affordable health coverage.  We'll continue to make sure all children can get healthcare."  In Illinois, SCHIP has helped provide healthcare to over 316,000 children.

 

The issue now moves to the Senate for confirmation

 

SEPTEMBER UNEMPLOYEMENT RATES

 

Illinois employers of the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area added 700 jobs to their payrolls, over the year, while the labor force expanded by more than 10,000.  All Illinois counties in the metro area have higher unemployment rates than the previous year.  September unemployment rates for local counties are as follows: Bond 4.9%, an increase of 1.2% from last September; Clinton 4.3%, an increase of .6%; Madison 5.3%, an increase of 1.1%; and St. Clair 6%, an increase of 1%.  Industrial sectors that have shown strong annual growth for the Metro East area, include Information, Wholesale Trade, Financial Activities, and Educational and Health Services.

SIUE GETS GRANT

Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville is getting a major grant.  According to Metro News Source, the more than $2 million grant comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Senior Services.  The funds will be used for SIUE's Head Start Early Education Program in East St. Louis.

TUNE INTO WGEL FOR

The Comets football team’s great season marches on.  The Comets beat Flora last Friday and are now set to face Duquion on Saturday at 1pm.  The game is at Duquion and you can hear it live on wgel with Kent Kesner and Mike O’Boyle.  The Comets are 10-0 so far this season and ranked first in their playoff braket.  Make plans to tune in this Saturday, kick-off is at 1pm here on WGEL.
