LINCOLN LAND LEATHERNECKS INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS

 

The Lincoln Land Leatherneck Marine Corps League Detachment 1174 held their Installation of Officers Banquet Saturday evening, at the VFW Post in Greenville. Special guests were State Representative Ron Stephens, Mayor Alan Gaffner and MCL 7th District Commandant Karl Bradshaw.

 

Local officers sworn in were Sr. Vice Commandant Dave Daniken, of Greenville, Jr. Vice Commandant Ray Hughes, of Sorento, Paymaster Jim Price, of Greenville and Sgt. At Arms Henry Steiner, of Mulberry Grove.  Special awards were presented to Ron Stephens for his assistance with the Trees for Troops and to Jim Price for his efforts with the food stand.

 

The Detachment Marine of the Year award was given to Robert Weber, of Trenton.


BOND COUNTY FARM BUREAU 2008 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

 

The Bond County Farm Bureau has released information regarding its 2008 Scholarship Program.  Two $500.00 college scholarships will be awarded.  Applications and program criteria may be obtained by contacting the Farm Bureau Foundation at 618-664-3100.  Applications and additional materials must be received at the Foundation Office, located at 925 East Harris in Greenville, by April 4, 2008.

MADISON COUNTY MAN SENTENCED FOR CREDIT UNION ROBBERIES

 

Montez Fuller, age 27, of Madison, Illinois was sentenced January 18th, on two counts of armed robbery and two counts of using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.  Fuller was sentenced to 564 months imprisonment, 5 years supervised release, ordered to pay a special assessment of $400.00 and ordered to pay $26, 802.00 in restitution to the Granite City Steel Federal Credit Union and $31,514 to the Olin Community Credit Union in Alton.  In addition, the court entered an order of forfeiture on a 1995 GMC Yukon the defendant purchased, with bank robbery proceeds.  Fuller was convicted on the bank robbery charges, August 27, 2007, following a four-day jury trial.  He has been in custody since June 19, 2006.

HIGHLAND COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOL DIST 5 BOARD MEETING

 

The Highland Community Unit School District #5 Board of Education next regular board meeting will be Monday, January 28th.  There will be a reception at 7:00 PM for New National Board Certified Teachers in the Administration Center and the meeting will begin at 7:30 PM.

FEBRUARY ROADSIDE SAFETY CHECKS

With Super Bowl Parties coming up, as well as other winter activities, the use of alcohol traditionally increases, but be sure to have a designated sober driver.  Throughout February, the Illinois State Police District 11 will be using Roadside Safety Checks in the Metro-East area of St. Claire, Madison, Monroe, Bond and Clinton Counties, to encourage everyone to be safe.


STOLEN DOG

 

The Bond County Sheriff's department is investigating the report of a stolen dog, north of Mulberry Grove, earlier this week.  The owner reported seeing a person, in an older dark blue Ford Ranger, put their Husky dog into the vehicle and drive away.  A reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction and return of the stolen family pet.  The dog is a full grown Husky. 


PRELIMINARY DEER SEASONS TOTALS

The Illinois deer seasons closed with a higher Late-Winter Harvest compared to last year, but the data for the archery deer season harvest shows about a 1.5% decrease compared to the 2006-07 season.  The total of deer taken during the 2007 Illinois Firearm Deer Season was 116,708.  This year’s total deer for the Archery Deer Season for Clinton County was 429, Madison County 1,146, Fayette County 888 and Bond County was 385 compared to last year’s 421. Bond County hunters also took 29 deer during the Late-Winter Deer Season.

OBITUARIES

TINA BARTELS

 

Tina Bartels age 85 of Sorento passed away Friday at Fair Oaks in Greenville.  Funeral services for 85 year old Tina Bartels will be held Monday at 11AM at the Perfetti Funeral home in Sorento.  Burial will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery.  Friends may call Monday one hour prior to service time at the Funeral home.


C. JEFF BREWER

 

C. Jeff Brewer age 87 of the Mt. Nebo neighborhood west of Greenville passed away Friday at Fair Oaks.  Funeral services for 87 year-old C. Jeff Brewer will be held at 11am Tuesday January the 29th at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral home.  Interment will follow in Brown Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 4-8PM Monday at the funeral home.  Fore those who desire memorials may be made to Bond County Hospice, Mt. Nebo, Old Ripley Church of Christ or Greenville Regional Hospital.
