Smithboro Firemen were called just before midnight Tuesday night to a house fire on Minnesota Avenue in Royal Lake, the home of Edith Fletcher.  According to Fire Chief Dale Deverick, the house was a total loss and the family lost most all of their belongings.  They were home at the time of the fire but there were no injuries.  The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.  The state Fire Marshall has been contacted to assist in investigating the cause.

Greenville Firemen were paged for mutual aid to provide manpower, water, and light and Mulberry Grove Firemen also responded to provide mutual aid with manpower and water.  Firemen were on the scene for about three and a half hours.

BEWARE ASPHALT DRIVEWAY FINISHING SCAM

The Madison County Sheriff's Office is investigating an attempted scam that occurred October 6th in the Godfrey area, involving the refinishing of an asphalt driveway.  This is a common scam that usually targets elderly persons.  Suspects offer to refinish or patch an existing driveway or install a small section using "left over" asphalt from a previous job, for little or no money.  However, once the job is finished, they demand large amounts of money from the victims.  The victim in this case resisted and made no payment, and contacted the Sheriff's Office.

WGEL called the Bond County Sheriff's Department and the State's Attorney's Office to see if there were reports of this scam occurring in Bond County.  Sheriff Jeff Brown said he had no reports of this scam here.  Investigator Jim Stevers advises you to be wary of anyone offering to do this type of work with "left over" materials for free or a small fee.  He suggested you ask for local references before agreeing to have work done.

RECORD BREAKING ENROLLMENT AT GREENVILLE COLLEGE

Greenville College hit another record breaking total with a traditional enrollment of 1139 for the Fall 2008 semester.  Total enrollment numbers, including graduate and adult programs, won't be finalized until later this month, but senior vice president for Enrollment Management, Pepper Dill anticipates the total enrollment number will be higher than last year. 111 more new students began the 2008 Fall semester than did five years ago.  There are fewer classrooms and some programs are growing without enough professors. Dill explains, with the growing enrollment there will be "growing pains" which is a regular part of the process.
