READ FINE PRINT BEFORE PURCHASING HOLIDAY GIFT CARDS
With gift cards expected to be one of the top choices for gifts this year, Attorney General Lisa Madigan wants you to be informed about gift card requirements. Illinois law requires that all gift cards remain active for at least five years and all material conditions, including the expiration date and any fees, are clearly displayed on the card. If an expiration date is not posted on the card, a toll-free number must be provided so the consumer can determine when the card expires. If you discover you have purchased a gift card without the required information, contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-243-0618.
