WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY

The entire WGEL listening area was under a winter weather advisory this morning.  Light rain, freezing rain, and sleet were falling throughout the area overnight and early this morning.  Overpasses, sidewalks, and side streets were and remain in some areas dangerously slick.  There have been several accidents on I-70 this morning, including a turned over tractor trailer and a large passenger van that emergency EMS personal responded too.   And according to the Bond County Sheriff's Department, reports of accidents are coming in from all points around the area.  So just be careful if you are on the roads this morning.  Allow extra time for getting to work and beware of ice patches on the road that may just look to be wet.

The icy conditions are not expected to stay with us very long today as the high temperature is expected to be about 50.

DISCUSSION ON EXPANSION OF ROUTE 51

At this week's monthly meeting of the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce, Jerry Payonk of Clark-Dietz Inc., one of the firms working on the U.S. Route 51 four-lane construction project, presented an update.  The expansion of Route 51 has been in the talking and planning process for over 20 years and the time frame continues into the far future. According to Payonk, IDOT and its consultants are in phase one of the project and at the end of phase one, the route from just south of Pana to Centralia will be mapped out. Phase two includes engineering work and land acquisition and will start in 2012.  Expanding Route 51 to four lanes has come a long way but has many years to go. Vandalia Chamber President Doug Knebel presided over his last meeting as his term comes to an end in December.
