VALUE CITY STORE IN GREENVILLE CLOSING

 

According to a spokesperson for Value City, the majority interest in the department store chain has been purchased by a company called VCHI Acquisition. After taking a look at the Value City Stores that fits the new owner's business plan, the company has decided to close the Greenville Value City Store within the next 6 to 8 weeks.


NEWS FROM LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT

 

The big word this morning is snow and the many small accidents, which can be credited to the slick roads.  Greenville Police handled a total of five accidents Thursday afternoon following the beginning of the snow in the area and they received calls for fifteen accidents on I-70.  The Bond County Sheriff's Department also responded to 4 accidents Thursday, which could be attributed to the slick roads.  Fortunately, no injuries in any of these accidents were serious enough for treatment at the hospital.


GREENVILLE PLAN COMMISSION RECOMMENDS PRELIMINARY PLAT APPROVAL

 

The Greenville Plan Commission met earlier this week and reviewed a Preliminary Plat from Franklin Hospitality, proposing to subdivide 4.24 acres, at 881 Illinois Rt. 127, south of Greenville, to allow for future growth and development. The proposal, passed unanimously by the plan commission, recommends the city council, approve the plan along with the installation of sidewalks. The next meeting of the Greenville City Council is set for Tuesday, February 12th. WGEL Spoke with Matt Willman, Greenville Building Inspector, who said the Sleep-In Motel, currently being built, is on Lot 1 of the new subdivision. Lot 2, south of the motel, will allow for future development, possibly a restaurant or gas station.

AMBULANCE FIRE ON I-70

 

According to Smithboro Fire Chief, Dale Deverick, an ambulance crew from St. Louis, was westbound on I-70, at the 48 mile-marker Monday evening, when they experienced an engine fire.  They used their fire extinguisher to fight the fire but it kept flaring up.  Smithboro firemen were called to the scene at 6:10 PM and successfully extinguished the blaze.  The fire was confined to the engine compartment and there were no injuries.  A tow truck was required to transport the ambulance back to St. Louis.  Mulberry Grove firemen were called to provide mutual aid with a tanker truck for water supply.


ROD AND GUN CLUB MEET ABOUT LAKE RENOVATION

 

The Bond County Rod and Gun Club met Monday night for a special meeting concerning the lake renovation project. Slatton Excavating will be doing the work for a total cost of $205,000.00. There were 29 members present and the majority voted to proceed with the renovation. The Board of Directors will now proceed with loan arrangements for the project. The next regular meeting of the club will be in March 2008.


 

VANDALIA TO MARK LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY

 

The Vandalia Historical Society will hold "Vandalia's Abraham Lincoln," its annual Lincoln" Birthday observance, at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, February 12th, in the Supreme Court Room, at the Vandalia Statehouse. In addition to the program, Lincoln memorabilia will be on display. The observance is free and open to the public.
