WOMAN CHARGED WITH HURRICANE KATRINA RELATED MAIL FRAUD

 

A Federal Grand Jury in E. St. Louis returned an indictment against Deangela Lynne Dixon, age 49 of Fairview Heights, for committing Hurricane Katrina related mail fraud. Dixon allegedly devised a scheme to defraud the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for federal assistance. The alleged event happened September 2005. Dixon claimed she was displaced by Hurricane Katrina when in fact she was living in Gary Indiana at the time of the storm. If convicted Dixon could face up to 25 years in prison and or a fine up to $250,000. To date, the Katrina task force has indicted 892 people.


 

ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM REGISTRATION DATES

 

The Regional Office of Education #3 Alternative Education Program will have high school registration on Wednesday and Thursday, August 13th and 14th, from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM.  Returning New Approach students should register at the Vandalia site.  Returning Aspire students should register at the Effingham site.  New student interviews will be August 13th - 15th and students will be contacted by the school.  The first full day of classes will be Monday, August 18th.


MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT TO SPEAK AT OPENING CEREMONIES FOR VETERANS TRAVELING WALL

 

Allen James Lynch, a Medal of Honor recipient for actions while serving is Vietnam, will be the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony for the American Veterans Traveling Tribute.  The ceremony will be in front of the Traveling Wall, Thursday, July 31st, at 7:00 PM, east of the Bond County Fairgrounds, off Killdeer Road.

BOY SCOUTS RETURN HOME

 

Scoutmaster George Schaufelberger and Greenville Boy Scout Troop 57 are completing an eventful, educational, fun-filled trip to the eastern United States.  Monday, they camped at Buckeye Lake KOA just outside Columbus, Ohio.  That day they visited the Air Force Museum and then headed on west.  They arrived in Greenville Tuesday afternoon.  The troop toured the Civil War Battlefield at Gettysburg Sunday and last Friday they went white water rafting on the Shennandoa River.

4-H CLOTHING AND GENERAL PROJECT SHOWS

 

The Annual 4-H Clothing Show/Fashion Review was July 10th at the Glenwood Supportive Living Center.  Fourteen 4-H members modeled their sewing and textile projects for parents, family, and friends. The Home Economics and General Project Show was Saturday, July 12th at the First United Methodist Church.  4-H members were judged on the quality of their projects and knowledge gained through project work.  Many Bond County 4-H members will be exhibiting their projects at the State Fair in Springfield, August 14th.

SPECIAL GREENVILLE CITY COUNCIL MEETING

 

The Greenville City Council will hold a special meeting to discuss the Appropriation Ordinance. The meeting will be held on July 31st at Noon in the Municipal Building
