VILLAGE OF KEYESPORT SPECIAL MEETING PLANNED FOR POSSIBLE TAX INCREASE

Two major items were on the agenda for the Keyesport Council meeting Monday night. First was the the proposal for a ¼ of 1% sales tax increase for the Village. After some discussions with the Village Attorney, he reported that the Village must have papers filed with the State before Jan 20, to get this on the ballot. The proposal was tabled until Thursday, January 15, at 7:00 PM for a special meeting.

The 2008 audit was presented and showed that the Village virtually broke even for the past year, but that all-in-all, they had a good cash balance increase. Finally, the Village was able to put up about half their Christmas decorations this year, but expect a full Christmas display next year.

The owners of Meridith Funeral Home have made a purchase to better serve the Highland Community.  Jim Meridith told us they bought the old Region's Bank building on Broadway in Highland. The new location will offer a huge parking lot, larger rooms, and have no steps. Construction should begin by January 19 and be completed sometime in June.  They should be open for business in July.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES IN GODFREY AND RURAL ALTON AREAS

The Madison County Sheriff's Office has received reports of residential burglaries earlier this month in Godfrey and subdivisions in the rural Alton area.  Often times, the person or persons looking to commit a residential burglary, will knock on the door or ring the doorbell.  If you answer the door, the suspects will ask to use the phone or ask for directions.  If this happens to you never let anyone inside your home.  Excuse yourself from the door as soon as possible and call local police immediately.  Provide an accurate description of the person and a vehicle if available.  The Madison County Sheriff's Department reminds you to report any suspicious activity in your area to your local law enforcement agency.  If you have any information on any crimes, call the anonymous tip-line at 618-296-7020.
