BOND COUNTY COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOL DISTRICT #2 STILL OWED $1.6 MILLION

The Bond County Unit 2 Board of Education met Monday night April 20, at the Sorento Grade School. The meeting was very well attended and the board discussed a very serious financial issue. The district is still owed almost 1.6 million dollars from the State of Illinois. Assistant Superintendent of Business & Finance Jeff Strieker explained that the federal funds were received on time, but the state funds were still lagging by as much as six months. He also said that, at this time, the district is in a good financial position, but there are concerns about when these monies will be paid. The board approved the bid of over $71,000 dollars to remove asbestos from the renovations to the Agriculture Building. The financial report showed a savings of about 10% from the natural gas estimate from last year. The athletic fields are almost done with just cosmetic work remaining around the track, and after spring sports are done, the goalposts and scoreboard for the football field will be finished.

MULBERRY GROVE ROCKET CLUB TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL CONTEST FOR FOURTH YEAR

Members of the Mulberry Grove Rocket Club will be competing in the Team America Rocket Challenge (TARC) for the fourth consecutive year.  Last year, the team placed 2nd in the nation at the NARC competition.  The event specifications this year were to fly to exactly 750 feet with a total flight duration, from lift-off to touchdown, of exactly 45 seconds, carrying a raw egg.  Teams are awarded a point for every foot above or below 750 feet.  The time difference from 45 seconds is doubled which adds that many points to the score.  A perfect score is zero.  The team qualified this year with a score of 4.14.  Their rocket altitude was 753 feet and the time was 44.43 seconds.  The competition is May 16, in Great Plains, Virginia.
