ACCIDENT CLAIMS FOUR LIVES AND INJURES FIVE

 

 

An early morning accident near Keyesport has resulted in the deaths of four people. According to the Clinton County Sheriff's Department, they and the Illinois State Police, are investigating a two-vehicle crash that happened at seven minutes past midnight Sunday morning.

 

A 1996 Pontiac sedan and a Cadillac SUV were involved in the crash. The Pontiac was occupied by Melissa Weiser age 27, and Chaz Sargent age 28, both of East Carondelet, Illinois.

 

The Cadillac SUV had seven occupants including Blake Thole age 21 of Aviston, Justin Haar age 21 of Beckemeyer, John Lampen age 21 of Breese, Crystal Fuehne age 21 of New Baden, Derek Garrison age 21 of Germantown, Elisha Engelmann age 20 of Albers, and Casey Athmer age 21 of Damiansville.

 

From information gathered so far, it appears the Pontiac was north bound on Emerald Road and the Cadillac was westbound on Keyesport Road, with the crash occurring in the westbound lane.

 

The four killed in that accident are:  Blake Thole, Justin Haar, Derek Garrison and Chaz Sargent. All others remain hospitalized.

 

 


MULBERRY GROVE UNIT 1 BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETS

 

The Mulberry Grove Unit 1 Board of Education met Tuesday, May 19.  The board received information regarding the district's PBIS plan and Title I designation for 2009-2010.  Following a closed session, the board approved updated policies, the final calendar for 2008-2009, and changes in the Title I program for 2009-2010.  Regina Johnson was hired to be the MGHS cheerleading sponsor, Jennifer Schuette the MGJH cheerleading sponsor, Chris Johnson MGHS head basketball coach and John Barnes MG JH/SH athletic director for 2009-2010.  Resignations were accepted from Sarah Nolte, and Michelle Ronat, effective at the close of the 2008-2009 school year.


NEW LEGISLATION ON DISTRACTED DRIVERS

 

The Illinois Senate has passed two bills that will strengthen laws on distracted drivers. One bill bans text messaging while driving and the other bans cell phone use in school or construction zones while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that at least 25% of police-reported crashes involve some sort of driver distraction. The penalty for violating these measures results in a moving violation that will go on the motorist's driving record. The bills now go to the House of Representatives for passage.




ST. JOSEPHS HOSPITAL HIGHLAND EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

 

During National Hospital Week, earlier this month, St. Joseph's Hospital named its employee of the year. During the employee banquet at the Knights of Columbus Hall May 14, Carolyn Enboden was named the Hospital's "Employee of the Year." Enboden has been employed at the hospital for four years as a physical therapy assistant in the Rehabilitation Department. Also 25 employees received service awards and seven recent retirees were recognized.


 

GREENVILLE TRACK SENIOR STATE CHAMP

 

Greenville Senior Lindsey Holden became an Illinois State Track Champion Saturday. Lindsey won the IHSA girls class 1A 100 meter dash and the 400 meter dash. She was greeted with a firetruck parade when she returned to Greenville. Kylee Kidd won the 7th grade girls state title in the discus and Cameron Walter won the 8th grade boys 100 meter dash state title.

 

COMETS WIN REGIONALS IN BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL

 

The Greenville Comets Baseball team beat Carlyle 2-1 in 13 innings at the Carlyle Regional Saturday to win the championship. The Comets loaded the bases with two out and Todd Eaton was hit by a pitch to force in the winning run. They next play this Wednesday at the Greenville Sectional. Game time is 4:30 PM and will be broadcast on WGEL.

 

The Lady Comets softball team defeated Wesclin 2-0 to win the Greenville Regional Championship. They next play Thursday at the Newton Sectional.

 

The Mulberry Grove Lady Aces softball team lost 7-2 to Raymond in the Raymond Regional Championship game.

DEREK A. GARRISON

 

Derek A. Garrison, age 21, of Germantown, passed away Sunday, May 24, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. A Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, May 28, at 11:00 AM at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Germantown with burial in St. Boniface Cemetery. Visitation for Derek A. Garrison will be Wednesday, May 27, from 4:00 - 9:00 PM and Thursday, May 28, from 8:00 - 10:30 AM at the Moss Funeral Home in Germantown. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

 

JUSTIN R. HAAR

 

Justin R. Haar, age 21, of Beckemeyer passed away Sunday, May 24, in Bond County. Funeral services for Justin R. Haar will be Wednesday, May 26, at 10:00 AM at the Moss Funeral Home in Breese with burial in Beckemeyer Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 26, from 4:00 - 9:00 PM and again on Wednesday from 8:00 - 9:45 AM at the Moss Funeral home in Breese. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

 

VICTOR GEORGE NEAL

 

Victor George Neal, age 82, formerly of the Sorento and Greenville areas, passed away May 21st in Wichita Falls. Funeral services for Victor George Neal were held Sunday, May 24th at the First United Methodist Church in Burkburnett. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital in Dallas, Texas. The Ownes and Brumley Funeral Home of Burkburnett is in charge of arrangements.

 

BOBBY E. PRICE

 

Bobby E. Price, age 68, of Pocahontas, passed away Friday, May 22, at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville. Visitation for Bobby E. Price will be Tuesday, May 26, from 4:00 - 8:00 PM and Wednesday, from 8:00 - 11:00 AM at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.

 

DAVID W. RASCH 

 

David W. Rasch, age 60, of Pocahontas, passed away Friday at the John Cochran VA Medical Center in Saint Louis, Missouri. Funeral services for David W. Rasch will be Thursday, May 28th at 10:00 AM at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, with burial at  Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 8:00 - 10:00 AM Thursday at the funeral home.

 

BLAKE ALLEN THOLE

 

Blake Allen Thole, age 21, of Aviston, passed away Sunday, May 24.  Funeral Mass for Blake Allen Thole will be Wednesday, May 27th at 1:30 PM at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM at Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston.
