GERMAN TOWN SOLDIER KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN

Two Illinois soldiers have died in combat in Afghanistan.  The Illinois National Guard says Staff Sergeant Joshua Melton, and Sergeant Paul Smith were both killed in action last Friday in Afghanistan.  Commanders say the two died when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Kandahar.  Two other Illinois Guardsmen were hurt in the blast.  Staff sergeant Melton, who is from Germantown, was on his second deployment with the National Guard.  He previously served in Iraq from December 2004 to March 2006.  Melton was serving with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry based out of Marion.  Sergeant Smith, who is from East Peoria, was assigned to with Troop C, 2nd Battalion, 106th Cavalry based in Aurora.  The Illinois Guard says this was Smith's third trip to a war zone.  Both men served with thousands of other Illinois soldiers who are part of the 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team which is training Afghan troops.  The 33rd IBCT has been in Afghanistan since late last year, the troopers will start coming home later this summer.


FRIDAY NIGHTS STORMS CAUSE DAMAGE

 

Multiple tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued by the National Weather Service Friday night in Bond, Montgomery and Fayette County. WGEL talked to police departments in all three counties and fortunately very little damage was reported. There were trees down in all three counties and reports of some power poles down in Fayette County. Early in the evening strong rotation was indicated on Doppler radar near Mulberry Grove. In Greenville a report of a power line sparking at 12:26am Saturday morning at 4th street and Route 40 had the Greenville Fire Department called out. And The Greenville Police department received a call at 1:43am about a tree across Durly Road. xr

 

YOUTH MAY EXPERIENCE SPACE FLIGHT SIMULATION

 

Youth enrolled in 7th through 9th grades in the fall of 2009, may experience simulated space missions, learn about shuttle operations, and be part of a shuttle mission team by attending the 4-H Missions in Space Weekend Camp, October 8-11, 2009, at the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.  The trip is offered through the University of Illinois 4-H program.  The cost for this experience is $360.00 with the first payment due by July 8.  Registration materials may be obtained at the Extension office in Greenville and are due by July 6.  For information, call 664-3665.

COOKIE DOUGH RECALL

 

The state of Illinois is warning consumers not to eat recalled Nestle Toll House Prepackaged refrigerated cookie dough due to the risk of possible contamination with E. Coli.  There are five suspected cases of E. Coli in Illinois and more than 60 nation wide.  Although most healthy adults usually recover from E Coli serious and even life threatening complications can occur.  If you've recently eaten the prepackaged refrigerated Nestle Toll House Cookie dough and feel sick your advised to contact your doctor. 

 




VILLAGE OF MULBERRY GROVE WILL FLUSH HYDRANTS

 

The village of Mulberry Grove will be flushing fire hydrants on Tuesday, June 23rd and Wednesday, June 24th starting at 9:30am.  Residents may expect low water pressure and some water discoloration.

JUDI ALDERMAN

 

Judi Alderman, age 50 of Greenville passed away Friday, June 19th at Greenville Regional Hospital. Funeral services for 50 year-old Judi Alderman will be Friday, June 26th at 11am at Young Funeral Home in Greenville. Visitation will be Thursday after 3PM at Young Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the family.


IDA L BASSETT

 

Ida L. Bassett, age 97 of Greenville passed away Saturday, June 20th at Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Greenville. Funeral services for 97 year-old Ida Bassett will be Tuesday at 10am at Donnell Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4pm to 7pm at Donnell Wiegand Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or Bond County Hospice.
