MCCARTER PROPOSES BUDGET PLAN

As the budget and tax increase battles continue in Springfield, Illinois State Senator Kyle McCarter has proposed his own ideas on balancing the budget without an income tax increase.  WGEL spoke with Senator McCarter on his way to Springfield about his budget plan. He spoke of his 5-step program to balance the budget. McCarter explained each step: 1, Implement a bridge plan now for a three month budget in place and use the fiscal 2008 spending level. 2, Implement reforms in Medicaid and pensions. McCarter said they are the two biggest cost drives in the budget. 3, Pass the budget with a 5% cut across the board. This includes the Governor, Legislature and every state department. 4, Set a policy that requires a 0% growth in programs, and no new programs that do not include a guaranteed revenue stream. And 5, Put into law common sense redistricting maps. McCarter said that if the State follows these steps the budget would be balanced in three to five years.

SKATE PARK CONSTRUCTION WELL UNDERWAY

On time and under budget, that's how the skateboard park construction is coming along.  The Kingsbury Park District held a short special meeting Monday at the district's office.  Director Jerry Sauerwine said the construction of the skateboard park is well on it's way to being finished by the first week of July and is still planned to be open to skaters by July 5.  The KPD board approved a change to the park that will add a concrete block and concrete pad that will have the dual purpose of a skating area and a bench.  So far, the cost of the park is just over $110,000.  Funding for the project came from many areas, including $100,000 from the state, another $5,000 from the Tony Hawk Foundation and local fundraising efforts as well.

An update was given on the KPD Pool.  A large pipe broke at the Pool on Sunday.  The piece is still under warranty and a replacement is being found.  The warranty will cover the cost for the replacement and park district personnel will be able to do the repairs.  Sauerwine said that when the replacement arrives he hopes the repairs will be done quickly.  Until then the pool is closed.
