NEW SKATEBOARD PARK IS READY FOR SKATERS

A state grant, local fundraising, the Tony Hawk Foundation, and funds from the KPD all made it possible to build the new skateboard park next to the pool in Greenville. The skateboard park is open and ready for skaters. While all the landscaping work isn’t complete, the park is functional and ready to be enjoyed.

BOOK FAIR 2009

The 2009 Greenville Regional Hospital Book Fair is coming up. WGEL spoke with Alan Gaffner about the book fair and how you can donate. Gaffner said that approximately 18 book collection barrels will be placed around Bond County. Books may also be taken to the Greenville Regional Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop or the lobby. Books may also be taken to the Fair Oaks Nursing Home Lobby. You can arrange to have books picked up by calling Allan Gaffner or Jack Chism at Greenville Regional Hospital at 664-1230 ext. 3222. The Book Fair runs from Thursday, July 23^rd at 5:00 PM, to Saturday July 25^th.

FOUR ALARM BARN FIRE SUNDAY

A fire Sunday morning involved four fire districts. At 2:35 AM, a barn fire at 635 Martin Road was reported to the Greenville Fire Department. Mulberry Grove and Keyesport Fire Departments were also called to help put out the blaze. The Smithboro Fire Department was called to stand by. After three hours, the fire was put out and damage was estimated at $60,000.

BOND COUNTY UNIT 2 BOARD OF EDUCATION TO MEET

The Bond County Unit 2 Board of Education is scheduled to meet today at 8:00 AM, in the unit office conference room. The agenda includes approval of site preparation work for construction of a storage facility, an update on special education funds and a closed session.

BAND BOARD TO MEET

The City of Greenville Band Board is scheduled to meet this afternoon at 4:00 PM, at the Municipal Building.

PROSECUTOR BASED VICTIM/WITNESS PROGRAM REPORT

The Bond County State's Attorney's Prosecutor Based Victim/Witness Program for April, May and June, 2009 provided services to 21 new clients this quarter in relation to crimes in the areas of assault, battery, domestic violence, DUI, and elder abuse. New and ongoing clients, who received services this quarter, numbered 43 and service was provided a total of 292 times. For information on the Victim/Witness Program, contact the Bond County State's Attorney's Office at 664-2262.

REMEMBER SPEED LIMIT IN WORK ZONES

The Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police remind Illinois motorists that construction season is underway and warn that tough laws are in place to crack down on speeders in work zones. Legislation signed in 2004, to slow down drivers in construction zones, has been effective in reducing work zone fatalities by over 50%. State law requires that first-time work zone speeders, including those caught on camera, face a fine of $375. A second offence could cost a motorist a $1000 fine. This summer, vans equipped with cameras will be deployed across the state in work zone areas, and if a motorist is caught speeding he can expect a ticket in the mail and he will have a mandatory court appearance.

Maurice "Gene" Edwards, age 76, of Pontoon Beach, formerly of Gillespie, passed away Saturday, July 4 at his residence. Graveside services for 76 year-old Maurice Edwards will be Wednesday, at 11:00 AM, at Gillespie City Cemetery, with full military honors.
