THE GOVERNOR CUTS JOBS IN IDOC
As the budget battles continue in Springfield, Governor Pat Quinn announced his plan yesterday to cut one billion dollars from the state budget including cutting jobs at Illinois prisons and in the Illinois Department of Corrections. 127 of these job cuts could happen at the Vandalia Correctional Center. In a released statement, Vandalia Mayor Ricky Gottman said these proposed layoffs would "negatively impact families in our community." Gottman also said that Illinois currently ranks near the bottom in the country in job creation, and the loss of these jobs will only worsen the economy in our region and throughout the state. The proposed job cuts have not gone into effect yet, and it's unclear when and if they will as the months-old fight over the budget continues at the capital.
BRIDGE IN NEED OF REPAIR ON DUDLEYVILLE ROAD
At the Tuesday Bond County Board Meeting, Bond County Highway Engineer Mick McCormick said that a Bond County and IDOT inspection of the bridge on Duddleyville road, just south of Airport Avenue, is in need of repairs, and that a three ton weight limit is now in effect on that bridge. It was said that the east part of the bridge is in the worst shape. No cost estimates or a timeline for repairs are available yet. McCormick also warned of other bridges that were built around the same time and that they will need repairs in the next few years. McCormick also said that the heavy rains this spring and summer have caused many culvert repairs to be necessary in the county. These repairs have caused the county to run over the budgeted amount for culvert repairs already for the entire 2009 fiscal year. The Bond County Board will next meet on Tuesday, July 21 at 7:00 PM, at the courthouse.
