BIRD IN CLINTON COUNTY TESTS POSITIVE FOR WEST NILE VIRUS

Illinois State Public Health Director Dr. Damon Arnold has announced the first positive test for West Nile Virus found in a bird in southern Illinois. The Clinton County Health Department collected a Robin July 8, in Breese, that tested positive. West Nile Virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has fed on an infected bird. Most people with the virus have no clinical symptoms but some may become violently ill. So far this year, 12 counties have reported positive tests for West Nile Virus. The best way to prevent West Nile Virus is to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and to take personal precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
