CARLYLE LAKE IMPROVEMENTS ANNOUNCED

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently announced multiple project upgrades at Carlyle Lake after receiving $4.6 billion for its civil works program. Project Manager Bob Wilkens expects somewhere around $21 million will go to projects at the lake. Among the priority projects, is fixing the rip-rap at the dam. Because of high water levels the last few years, erosion has taken its toll all over the lake but especially at the main dam. There is no danger of collapse but these repairs are needed. Other projects include replacing 18 restrooms with 14 new units that are handicapped accessible, modernizing the sewer system, completing the wall that will protect the harbor at the Carlyle Sailing Association, dredging marine harbors, expanding the visitor's center, replacing trees, tractors and safety buoys. A bike/pedestrian bridge will be built south of the lake to connect the east side of the spillway to the General Dean Suspension Bridge. Wilkens added that these projects will bring new jobs to the area and hopefully will help stimulate the local economy.
