SCHOOLS PROTECTED FROM MINE SUBSIDENCE

 

A new law provides protection for school buildings damaged or destroyed by mine subsidence through emergency relocation funds and classification as top priority for rebuilding.  Currently, the Illinois State Board of Education releases funds for damages related to fires, earthquakes, tornadoes or other natural or man-made disasters. House Bill 2530 adds mine subsidence to this list of disasters that requires new school construction. sdc'

 

BOND-FAYETTE-EFFINGHAM REGION RECEIVES GRANT FOR ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL AND TRUANCY PREVENTION

 

According to Regional Superintendent Mark Drone, the Bond-Fayette-Effingham Regional Office of Education has been awarded a $119,965 grant from the Illinois State Board of Education.  The grant will help support the New Approach Alternative High School in Vandalia and the Aspire Alternative High School in Effingham, providing the region's at-risk students with supportive services.  This is the seventeenth year the Regional Office has provided an alternative high school for the region's students.   The grant also helps fund the Regular Attendance Program serving all three counties and helps implement the "Miss School…Miss Out" program which plays an important roll in keeping kids in school.  For more information on at-risk programs, call 618-283-5011.

FREE MEDICAL SCREENING CLINIC

 

The Bond County Shrine Club is sponsoring a free medical screening clinic Saturday, September 12 from 9:00 a.m. until noon at Greenville Regional Hospital.  This free screening will help identify children who can benefit from the expert care at Shriner's Hospital for Children.  If you know of a child, under the age of 18, with an orthopedic problem, bring them for an evaluation to determine if they can benefit from treatment at Shriner's Hospital in St. Louis, where care is provided by many of the world's leading surgeons, at no charge.



MATER DEI GRAD GETS TWO HITS IN FIRST MLB GAME

 

Josh Thole is a 2005 graduate of Mater Dei and last week he was called up to the New York Mets and started his first game at catcher for the Mets Thursday.  Thole went 2 for 5 with a deep double to center and he stole a base.  Thole also singled in his first ever Major League at bat in the Mets win over the Rockies.

FOOTBALL COMETS WIN

 

The Greenville High School Football Comets defeated Piasa Southwestern 28-14 Friday night to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Behind Todd Eaton's 164 yards passing and Brian Doll's 131 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns, the Comets were able claim a share of first place in the South Central Conference. The Comets next travel to Carlinville this Friday to take on the Cavaliers at 7PM and you can hear that game live on WGEL Radio 101.7FM.

DR CHARLES DAISY

 

Dr. Charles R. Daisy, age 72 of Greenville passed away Thursday September 3rd in Naples, Florida. Funeral services for 72 year-old  Dr. Charles Daisy will be Wednesday at 10am at the Greenville First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4PM to 8PM at the Greenville First Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions are suggested to Greenville Regional Hospital or the University of Illinois Foundation. Young Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of the arrangements.
