PETITION DISMISSED TO JOIN TWO LOCAL FIRE DISTRICTS

 

Last Friday, a motion to dismiss the petition to join the Mulberry Grove and Smithboro Fire Protection Districts was filed, on behalf of the petitioners, by their attorney Jack Johnston.  The suit was dismissed without prejudice on Friday as well.  A hearing on the matter scheduled for today at the Bond County Courthouse has been cancelled.  No other changes are happening, at this time, regarding the size or shape of either the Smithboro or Mulberry Grove Fire Protection Districts.  With the dismissal, the two districts will continue to be independent. 


MULBERRY GROVE FIREMEN RESPOND TO BARN FIRE

 

Mulberry Grove Firemen responded to a barn fire Monday at 10:00 a.m.  The barn is about one mile into Fayette County and was not being used by the owner.  According to Dwight Volkmar, Mulberry Grove Fire Chief, the barn was a total loss and was burned almost completely by the time firemen were called.  Mulberry Grove Firemen were on the scene for about one and one half hours.  There was no property inside the barn and no one was hurt. 

 


ONE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT SUNDAY

 

Bond County Sheriff's Officers responded to a one-vehicle accident Sunday morning. According to the accident report, a 21 year-old female driver, was driving a 2005 Chevy Cavalier westbound on Airport Ave., approaching Raven road, when a deer ran in front of her, causing her to lose control of her car. She hit the ditch and then struck a utility pole. No injuries were reported but extensive damage was done to her vehicle.


BOND COUNTY BOARD TO MEET THIS MORNING

 

The Bond County Board will meet this morning at the courthouse at 10:00 a.m.  Items on the agenda include monies from the anti-crime fund for the simple room, a resolution of support for the senior center to receive a state grant for community development assistance and the sheriff's report.  For full post-meeting coverage, stay tuned to WGEL Radio.

PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST FOR NATION'S NUMBER ONE STATE

 

Pumpkin production in Illinois is big business.  Illinois now harvests 13,679 acres of pumpkins each year on 502 farms.  An Illinois Department of Agriculture initiative to promote this specialty crop is the Illinois Products Farmers Market in the Commodities Pavilion on the Illinois State Fair Grounds.  The market is open Thursday evenings between May and October, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.  On October 22, you are invited to compete in a pumpkin carving competition.  Pumpkins must be purchased from an Illinois vendor on site and first prize is an Illinois products gift basket.  For more information on this contest, call 217-725-4873.

GARY L. VARNER

 

Gary L. Varner, age 62, of Sorento, passed away Friday, October 2 at his home.  Funeral services for 62 year-old Gary Varner will be Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m. at the Perfetti Funeral Home in Sorento.  Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery.  Friends may call Tuesday, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. 

 

CLETIS L. EGGIMANN

 

Cletis L. Eggimann, age 43, of Marine, passed away Monday, October 5 at his mother's home. Funeral services for 43 year-old Cletis Eggimann will be Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m. at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Marine. Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson, MO. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, from 8:00 a.m. bnuntil service time at the funeral home.
