TANK EXPLOSION NORTH OF ST. ELMO

 

Wednesday afternoon, several fuel storage tanks, located six miles north of St. Elmo, caught fire. According to Larry Pierce, a spokesperson for National Gas Pipeline Company, welding was being done on what he described as fuel holding tanks when the fire started. Two employees were injured in that fire and taken to area hospitals. As of 9:00 p.m. last night, there is no condition reports on the two injured workers. According to Mr. Pierce, the fire is under control.

COMMUNITIES SET TRICK-OR-TREAT HOURS

 

Halloween is rapidly approaching and area towns and villages will have trick-or-treat hours on one night only, Saturday, October 31.  In Greenville, youngsters 12 years old and younger may trick-or-treat from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m.  In Keyesport and Carlyle, the hours are from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. for kids 12 and under.  The hours in Vandalia and Breese are also 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. for elementary age students in Breese and elementary students through 5th grade in Vandalia.  Kids 12 and under may trick-or-treat in Mulberry Grove from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. and in Pocahontas from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.  Highland hours are 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.

TRUNK OR TREAT THIS FRIDAY IN GREENVILLE

 

Friday there will be a new form of trick or treat and a chance for kids to show off their costumes as the First United Methodist Church and area businesses present the first annual Trunk or Treat. Businesses will have open trunks filled with goodies for the kids, parked along 2nd street from Main Street south to the Church. Trunk or Treat Friday night starts at 6:00 p.m. in downtown Greenville.

REPORT OF TRACTOR THEFT

 

The Bond County Sheriff's Department is investigating the theft of a tractor. According to the police report, at 10:30 a.m. last Friday, Carl Barth, of Sorento, reported that a tractor was missing from a shed on Old Ripley Road. The estimated value of the tractor is $5,000.

FARM LEASE TERMINATION DEADLINE NEARS

 

The last day of October is the deadline for a farmland owner to terminate a farm lease with a tenant. In Illinois, the statute states that, "In order to terminate tenancies from year to year of farm lands, the notice to quit shall be given in writing not less than four months prior to the end of the year of letting." In Illinois, most leases begin on March 1st, making October 31st of the year before, the deadline. To terminate the lease, a written notice must be given to the tenant before the deadline. For many leases, if the notice is not given in time, the lease automatically renews. Reasons vary as to why an owner may want to terminate a lease but a common reason is cash rent leases where the owner feels he will lose money the next year. One other thing to consider, terminating a lease can have many legal implications.

2009 ORGANIC GARDENING DAY

 

The 2009 Organic Gardening Day is Saturday, November 21 at the Hawthorn Hotel and Suites in Champaign, IL.  Registration and exhibits open at 8:00 a.m. with educational sessions beginning at 9:00.  Organic gardening experts from around the United States will present sessions to inspire herb gardening and use this coming year.  You must pre-register and registrations will be accepted through November 13.  The registration fee is $59.00.  For more information, call 217-333-3420.

PROPER HANDLING OF VENISON AND OTHER WILD GAME

 

This is the time of year when hunters bring home venison and other wild game.  University of Illinois nutrition and wellness educator Martha Winter advises that for the best eating quality, the meat should be properly handled from the field to the table.  A booklet entitled, "From Field to Table," including wild game handling information and recipes is available at the Bond County U of I Extension Office.  Call 664-3665 for details.

WELDON TROWBRIDGE

 

Weldon Trowbridge age 78 of Lincoln IL., father of Deborah and Mrs. Charles Bone of rural Mulberry Grove, passed away Friday October 23rd at Fayette County Hospital. Graveside Funeral services for 78 year-old Weldon Trowbridge will be 1PM Saturday at the Zion Cemetery, 3 miles north of Lincoln. The family will welcome friends to join them at Zion Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Mulberry Grove First Responders and will be received at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville.

 

NELDA ANNABELLE RUPPE

 

Nelda Annabelle Ruppe, age 82, of Hillsboro, passed away Wednesday, October 28 at Hillsboro Area Hospital.  Funeral services for 82 year-old Nelda Ruppe will be Sunday, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro.  Burial will be in Olive Hill Cemetery.  Friends may call Saturday, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

RONALD R. LYNCH

 

Ronald R. Lynch, age 71 or rural Donnellson, passed away Tuesday, October 27th at his home.  In accordance with his wishes his body will be cremated. A memorial service for 71 year-old  Ronald Lynch will be held in July of 2010.  Memorial contributions are suggested to the family.
