AIRMAN'S FUNERAL MOTORCADE

 

 

A motorcade procession Saturday for a killed airman from Troy drew hundreds of people into the frigid weather including people from Greenville. The motorcade allowed people to honor fallen airman Bradley Smith. Smith was killed in Afghanistan on January 3.

RASH OF BURGLARIES IN VANDALIA

 

 

A rash of burglaries and attempted burglaries has Vandalia Police looking for information.  The burglaries have been bold attempts to break into residences.  The suspect or suspects are possibly knocking on the front door to determine if someone is home, then leaving and circling back to the back door of the home to attempt to break in.  Twice they have been attempting entry to the home as the residents arrived.  The Vandalia Police are asking anyone who notices someone acting suspiciously around a neighbor’s home to contact the police immediately.  A cash reward is also being offered from the Fayette County Crime Watchers fund. MADISON COUNTY MAN DIES AFTER SHOVELING SNOW

Authorities say a 72-year-old man died Thursday after he had shoveled snow and then collapsed at his Madison County home.  Officials say Charles R. Usrey went inside his home in the eleven-hundred block of Reynolds Street and collapsed, after shoveling snow, experiencing a heart attack.  Authorities say Usrey was taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center, where he was declared dead around 9:30 a.m.  Officials say his death seems to be tied to shoveling snow. Exertion when combined with the extremely cold temperatures can be dangerous. 

 

 

GREENVILLE FIREMEN RESPOND TO FALSE ALARM

 

Greenville Firemen were called to 203 East College Avenue Saturday night at 11:45 p.m. after a fire alarm sounded. Upon arrival it was determined that someone had cooked popcorn in a microwave for too long and that set off the alarm. Firemen were on the scene for approximately 30 minutes.

Doris J. Haight, age 96, of south of Mulberry Grove, passed away Friday, January 8 at the home of her daughter. Memorial funeral services will be Tuesday, at 1:00 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Roxanne, Mrs. James Miller, at 947 Mulberry Grove Road, two miles south of Mulberry Grove.  Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Neosho, MO.  Memorials are suggested to the Greenville First Christian Church or the Community Church of Joy of Palm Desert, CA.  Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of the arrangements.

Charles R. Davis, age 73, of Greenville, passed away Friday, January 8 at Greenville Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Interment will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 282 and V.F.W. Post 1377. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. Memorials may be made to the St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

James B. "Jim" Hammer, age 63, of Trenton, passed away Thursday, January 7 at his residence. A memorial visitation for 63 year-old James "Jim" Hammer will be Wednesday, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Trenton. Memorials may be made to the Sportsman's Club or the Nut House Club.

 

RONALD FISCHER

 

Ronald D. "Fonz" Fischer, age 51, of Breese, passed away Friday, January 8 at his residence. A funeral Mass of Christian burial for 51 year-old Ronald "Fonz" Fischer will be Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Church in Breese. Burial will be in St. Dominic/St. Augustine Cemetery in Breese. Visitation will be Monday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 8:00 - 9:45 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese. Memorials may be made to his son Nick's college education fund or to Clinton County Relay for Life.

Rita A. Beckert, age 85, of Greenville, passed away Saturday, January 9 at Helia Health Care. Funeral services will be Tuesday, at 11:00 a.m. at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Brown Cemetery.  Friends may call today, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church building fund or the Mission's Fund of the Loyal U of I class.

Nora J. Voyles, age 70, of Panama, passed away Saturday, January 9 at Greenville Regional Hospital.  Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m. at Young Funeral Home in Greenville.  Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Sorento.  Friends may call Tuesday, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

 

 

ELVIE MCDOWELL

 

Elvie R. McDowell, age 84, of Greenville, passed away Saturday, January 9 at Fair Oaks Nursing Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday, at 11:00 a.m. at Young Funeral Home in Greenville.  Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery.  Friends may call Tuesday after 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the Bond County Senior Center.
