WOMAN AND TWO CHILDREN DROWN

A woman, who apparently tried to save two children who fell through the ice on a lake near Waterloo, drowned along with the two children. According to a copywritten story in the Belleville News-Democrat, Kathy Baxmeyer, age 40, her son Kadin Baxmeyer, age 7, and Kadin's friend Steven "Austin" Baum, age 6, perished sometime Friday evening. Baum's mother had called police after not being able to contact Baxmeyer. Deputies went to the Baxmeyer home at 3145 Loehr Road. There they found boots and gloves near a lake by the home. A police dog was brought in and the dog traced a smell to the lake where a hole was visable. The bodies of the three victims were found in about twelve feet of water. Although an autopsy confirmed drowning, an investigation into the tragic accident continues.

COUNTY BOARD APPROVES SAFETY UPGRADE TO RAILROAD CROSSING

At the recent Bond County Board meeting, Highway Engineer Mike McCormick presented a plan to improve the safety of a railroad crossing near Smithboro, on Woburn Road.  The improvements will include automatic flashing lights and gates along with smoothing the transition from railroad to road, to reduce wear to cars and the road.  The total cost to the county, for the improvements, is only 10% of the nearly quarter of a million dollar project or just over $25,000.  The board approved the project. There is no specific word on when the work will be done, but the project, once started, should only last about twelve days.  The board also approved a liquor license for Jim Miller for the business "Just Jimmy’s" in the old Scott’s Package Liquor building.  IDOT has contacted Bond County Transit about state funds that are available to purchase another vehicle for Bond County.  The board passed a resolution to purchase the new mini van with state funds.  The money is from the stimulus and recovery act.
