FIRE DESTROYS HOME NEAR SORENTO

Shoal Creek and Greenville Firemen were called to a house fire at 1875 Panama Avenue Friday afternoon. The home belongs to Robert Collman but he was not the occupant. The fire burned for hours and the home suffered extensive damage including the roof collapsing or being cut down to help fight the fire. Flames could be seen coming from the roof and the smoke was visible for miles. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Shoal Creek Firemen were the first to respond and they called Greenville for mutual aid. Firemen were on the scene for more than five hours.

ACCIDENT TAKES LIFE OF TROY MAN

A single-car accident, at 11:51 a.m. Friday, on Route 161, took the life of a Troy man. 55 year-old Terry Buol of Troy was traveling west on Illinois Route 161, just west of Shiloh Station Road, when he veered across the on-coming traffic lanes, left the road way and struck a utility pole head-on. Buol was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville where he passed away. According to the Illinois State Police, the accident remains under investigation but Buol’s medical history could have been a factor in the accident.

STATE BOARD OF ELECTIONS CERTIFIES BRADY

State Senator Bill Brady has defeated Kirk Dillard for the Republican Governor's nomination. The Illinois State Board of Elections certified the results, showing Brady finished 193 votes ahead of Dillard. Dillard will hold a press conference in Chicago at 1:30 today, presumably to concede the race. He has the option to ask for a recount, but has indicated he would not do so unless Brady's lead had been trimmed to with 100 votes. If Dillard concedes, Brady will begin his campaign, along with Lieutenant Governor nominee Jason Plummer, against Democratic nominee, incumbent Governor Pat Quinn. The Democratic State Central Committee is expected to select Quinn's running mate this month.

GREENVILLE SPRING LEAF VACUUMING GOING ON NOW

The City of Greenville's leaf vacuuming program began Monday, March 1 and will run through Friday, April 16. Rake your leaves to the curb or edge of the road so the vacuum can reach them. Please keep leaf piles less than three feet high and do not mix sticks, brush and other debris with the leaves. Leaves will be composted and offered to residents. You may obtain compost from the city after April 1.

HABITAT GARDENING CLASS AT VANDALIA CAMPUS

The Kaskaskia College Office for Continuing/Community Education will present a Habitat Gardening course at the Vandalia Campus, Tuesday, March 16, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The fee for students under 60 is $10.00. Students over 60 may register at no cost. Pre-registration is required and space is limited so please register early by calling 283-1780.

GOVERNOR'S ENVIRONMENTAL CORPS SUMMER INTERNSHIP APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is accepting applications for the 2010 Governor's Environmental Corps summer internship program through March 17. Selected students work with staff members in the fields of wastewater, drinking water, air quality, solid and hazardous waste and laboratory analysis. BOND COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING PREVIEW

The Bond County Board of Health will meet tonight at 7:00, at their new building. Some items on the agenda include an update on the old health building, H1N1 and seasonal flu reports, policy revues and revisions, HIV counseling, annual reports, a review of January and February activities and financial reports, and a Home Health Medicare Survey. Also to be discussed are the Central Illinois Community Blood Drive and building issues. WGEL will have a full report of the meeting.

William D. Wernle, age 77, of Highland, passed away Friday, March 5 at St. Louis University Hospital. Edwin N. Baumberger, age 88, of north of Greenville, passed away Friday, March 5 at Greenville Regional Hospital.
