FEBRUARY UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

The Illinois seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased slightly in February to 11.4%, up one tenth from the 11.3% rate in January. The national unemployment rate for February was 9.7%. According to Illinois Department of Employment Security Director Maureen O'Donnell, they are encouraged by the slowing pace of job loss, but need a few more months of data to see if this recovery takes. Illinois' unemployment rate is at its highest level since July 1983. There were 758,100 unemployed people in Illinois in February. Since the recession began in December 2007, the nation has lost 8.4 million jobs, while Illinois has lost over 400,000 jobs.
