FIRE DEPARTMENT SMALL EQUIPMENT GRANTS AWARDED

 

Grants totaling nearly $2 million have been awarded to 112 Illinois community fire departments for purchase of small equipment.  Illinois State Fire Marshall Larry Matkaitis said, “Having the right safety equipment is essential for first responders.  It is especially important that local fire departments continually strive to acquire the latest equipment to fight fires and save lives.”  To be eligible for small equipment grants of up to $26,000.00, fire departments must have participated in the National Fire Incident Reporting System for at least the past two years.  Four Bond County Fire Departments will receive a share of these funds.  Mulberry Grove will receive $25,996.00, Pocahontas-Old Ripley $19,000.00, Smithboro $26,000.00, and Shoal Creek $26,000.00.

AGAPEFEST 2010 COMING THIS WEEKEND

 

The 34th annual AgapeFest is this weekend, April 30 – May 1 at the Bond County Fairgrounds.  The event starts at 5:00 p.m. Friday featuring musical acts ranging from hip-hop and praise-and-worship, to rock and contemporary.  The David Crowder Band will close the Friday night line-up.  The festival continues at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 1 with the Grammy award winning artist Skillet scheduled to close the event.  Advance tickets are available at 1-800-965-9324.  For more information, call 664-1806.

SPORTS CAMP SCHEDULED FOR JUNE

 

The All South Illinois Fellowship of Christian Athletes free three-day sports camp is June 21-23, at the Greenville Junior High School.  The free sports camp is for boys and girls who will be in fifth to eighth grades next school year.  Camp starts each day at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 2:30 p.m.  A continental breakfast and lunch are provided along with an FCA T-shirt and a New Testament.  For more information, call 664-1747.

KINDERGARTEN SCREENING & PRE-REGISTRATION AT POCAHONTAS SCHOOL

 

Children who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2010 are eligible for kindergarten enrollment.  Pocahontas School will have kindergarten screening and pre-registration Thursday, May 6 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Parents must bring birth certificates and shot/immunization records.  To schedule a screening, call 618-669-2296.

DEBBIE SWETT

 

Debbie Swett, age 50, of Sorento, passed away Monday, April 26 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.  Funeral services for 50 year-old Debbie Swett will be Friday, at 1:00 p.m. at the Perfetti Funeral Home in Sorento.  Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery.  Friends may call Friday, from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

 

ALOIS E. HOGG

 

Alois E. “AL” Hogg, age 88, of Breese, passed away Wednesday, April 28 at Villas of St. James in Breese. Funeral services for 88 year-old Alois Hogg will be Friday, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Paul Catholic Church in Highland. Burial will be in Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Highland. Visitation will be Friday, from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Snows, Hospice of Southern Illinois, or in the form of Masses.

 

NORMAN C. SIEFKER

 

Norman C. “Boo” Siefker, age 76, of Breese, passed away Tuesday, April 27 at his residence. Private services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s research or Shirners Children’s Hospital.
