RAIN TOTALS, WEATHER, AND POLICE CALLS FROM WEDNESDAY

 

Two traffic accident calls, to the Bond County Sheriff’s Department Wednesday, were attributed to the band of severe thunderstorms that passed through the WGEL listening area early in the morning.  Cars were reported off the road on the Millersburg Road and also on Rt. 127, north of Hazel Dell Road.  No injuries were reported.  Traffic lights were not functioning at the intersection of Rt. 40 and Rt. 127 and a downed wire was reported at Sixth Street and South Avenue.  Greenville received about an inch of rain before 6:00 a.m. Wednesday but only light showers throughout the remainder of the day.  Rain totals as of 6:00 a.m. this morning showed two tenths of an inch at the Sewer Plant and 19 hundredths at both the station on Sixth Street and at Idler Lane and Rt. 140.  Rain is back in the forecast for today, tonight and Friday tune to WGEL Radio for the latest local weather.

SECURITY SYSTEM ALMOST DONE AND NEW JAYCEE BUILDING ABOUT TO START

 

The May Kingsbury Park District meeting was held recently. Director Jerry Sauerwein told the board that Griffith Security systems has been working on site and should finish with the security system at the pool and skateboard park this week. Sauerwein also said the work for the new concession building at Jaycee Park should start the week of May 17.

 

Sauerwein brought a copy of the new recreation brochure to show the board, and said the brochure goes out to the public May 11. Baseball starts June 11 and the pool should open on schedule May 29.

 

The park district is still actively seeking land for their sports complex project and is working on a final draft for the overall view of the complex. A rendering of what that complex could include and should look like should be finished soon and ready to show to the public.

SHIMKUS RECEIVES U.S. CHAMBER AWARD

 

Congressman John Shimkus was recently presented the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Spirit of Enterprise Award at an event hosted by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce in Mt. Vernon.  The Spirit of Enterprise Award is given to members of Congress who vote at least 70 percent of the time on key votes selected by the U.S. Chamber.  Fifteen House votes were considered to receive this year’s award.  Shimkus has a cumulative voting rating, over 13 years, of 89 percent with the Chamber.

SORENTO SCHOOL ATHLETIC AWARDS NIGHT COMING SOON

 

The annual athletic awards night at Sorento School, for grades 5-8, will be Thursday, May 13 beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Parents of athletes are asked to bring a dessert to share.  Athletes involved in cheerleading, girls basketball, boys basketball, volleyball, and track will be recognized.

JANICE KIOUS

 

Janice Kious age 61 of Greenville passed away Wednesday May 12th at her home.  Private services are planned for 61 year old Janice Kious.  Friends may call Friday after 4PM at the Young Funeral Home in Greenville.  Memorials are suggested to Bond County Hospice. 

 

JAMES CASEY DAVIS

 

James Casey Davis age 73 formerly of Greenville passed away Tuesday in Iowa.  Graveside services for 73 year old James Casey Davis will be Saturday at 10AM in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Greenville.  The Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville is handling the arrangements.
