HOUSE FIRE SATURDAY IN SMITHBORO

 

A vacant house is a complete loss after a Saturday evening fire.  The 911 fire call was received around 5:20PM that the house at 1847 Wyoming Street in Smithboro was on fire.  According to Smithboro Fire Chief, Dale Deverick, the house was fully engulfed by the time fire fighters arrived, with the roof and walls already collapsing.  The house had been vacant for many years, and no gas or electricity was on in the house.  The cause of the fire is undetermined.  No one was hurt as firefighters fought the blaze for almost three hours.  Mulberry Grove was called for mutual aid for man power and Greenville was called as well, but canceled in route.  The fire alarm was called in by a neighbor.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATES INCREASE AT SLOWER PACE IN ILLINOIS

 

According to information from the Illinois Department of Employment Security, unemployment rates were above previous-year levels in all twelve metro areas for the 35th consecutive month in April.  However, the increases have been consistently smaller in each of the four most recent months.  IDES Director Maureen O’Donnell said, “Four consecutive months of smaller increases in this rate is encouraging because it offers another measure that indicates this national recession might be nearing an end.”  The April 2010 unemployment rate for the Illinois section of the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area was 9.9 percent.  This is the highest rate in the Metro East area since 1986 when it was ten percent.  In Bond County, the unemployment rate increased from 8.1% in April 2009 to 10.1% in April 2010.  In Clinton County, the rate increased from 7.0 - 7.8%.  Madison County showed an increase from 9.0 to 9.8% and St. Clair County went from 9.1 – 10.6%.

ALHAMBRA HOMECOMING

 

The annual Alhambra Homecoming, sponsored by the Alhambra Volunteer Fire Department and the Alhambra Jaycees is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 18-19 at the Alhambra Firemen-Legion Park.  The festival features food, drinks, games, rides, the Dance House Dancers, and live music.  Familiar Strangers will perform Friday night and Out of Focus Saturday night.  The parade starts at 7:00 p.m. Friday and at 6:00 p.m. Saturday with the theme, “Old Time Rock and Roll.”  For more information on the Alhambra Homecoming, call Don at 618-488-7368.

 

CHEERLEADING CAMPS AT KASKASKIA COLLEGE

 

Kaskaskia College cheerleaders will host two cheerleading clinics for area students in pre-K through 8th grade.  The first session will be Thursday, June 24 and the second will be Thursday, July 22.  Both sessions will be from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the KC gymnasium.  Pre-registration is required.  For a registration form or more information, call 545-3255.

KASKASKIA COLLEGE QUICKBOOK TRAINING

 

The Illinois Small Business Development Center at Kaskaskia College will be offering four 4-hour sessions of non credit QuickBooks Pro Software training at the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus. The Sessions will run on Tuesday afternoons from 1pm to 5pm on June 8th to the 29th. Pre-registration is required and the fee will be $150.00 with and optional fee for a textbook to have after classes end of $45. For more information or to register call 545-3429.

TOMMIE CHRESTMAN

 

Tommie F. “Frank” Chrestman, age 66 of Highland, passed away Wednesday, May 26th at his residence. Funeral services for 66 year old Tommie “Frank” Chrestman will be Tuesday at 10am at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8pm and Tuesday from 8 to 10am at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland.

 

GERALD BLUNT

 

Gerald S. Blunt, age 63 of St. Louis formerly of Greenville, passed away Friday, May 28th. Funeral services for 63 year old Gerald Blunt will be Wednesday at 10:30am at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8pm at Donnell-Wiegand funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association, Mid-West Transplant or the American Society for prevention of cruelty to animals.
