WOMAN CONVICTED IN ACCIDENT THAT KILLED FOUR CHANGES PLEA

A woman, convicted of multiple charges from an accident that killed four people, now wants to change her plea. Melissa J. Weiser, age 28, of East Carondelet, appeared in Clinton County Circuit Court recently to file a motion to change her guilty plea. Wieser pled guilty to 32 counts of driving under the influence in an accident in Clinton County last May near Keyesport. Wieser is currently serving a 20 year sentence and must serve at least 85% of the term. According to Clinton County State’s Attorney John Hudspeth, this motion is commonly filed by people who are found guilty and serving jail sentences and want to reduce their sentence. Hudspeth believes that the motion will be denied. The hearing will be set for sometime in August.

OVERTURNED TRACTOR TRAILER BLOCKS WESTBOUND LANES OF I-70 TUESDAY MORNING

A tractor trailer driver lost control of his rig early Tuesday morning and the truck rolled over, blocking both westbound lanes of Interstate 70 in Madison County, north of Highland.  Illinois State Police and Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies worked the accident scene.  The driver was reportedly injured and transported to a nearby hospital with what are believed to be non life-threatening injuries.  Westbound traffic was backed up for some time but according to Illinois State Police all lanes on Interstate 70 were open again before 8:00 a.m.  The truck was on the side of the road at that time waiting to be unloaded.  The cause of the accident is not known.

WATCH FOR SWEEPSTAKES LOTTERY SCAM

According to Bond County State’s Attorney Chris Bauer, several citizens have received notification of sweepstakes lottery winnings along with a check from an address in Canada.  The letter says they are among 32 winners to share $4 million.  Before claiming winnings, tax monies must first be paid to a tax agent.  The mailed check is bogus and cannot be cashed.  Watch for these clues that the letter is part of a scam.  If you did not purchase a lottery ticket in this county, it is questionable that you could win a prize.  Legitimate lotteries advertise through television or newspapers, not the internet, mail or FAX and no legitimate lottery requests advance fees.  If you receive a similar letter, contact the State’s Attorney’s office at 664-2262.
