WATER MAIN BREAK AT GREENVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Last Wednesday evening, a water main broke and flooded most of the rooms at the Greenville Elementary School at 800 North Dewey Street. According to Mike Wilhite, Facilities Director for the Bond County Unit 2 School District, a 3-inch water main broke and was not noticed until around 7:30 p.m. Approximately three fourths of the rooms in the building were affected by the water. Many district personnel and volunteers quickly showed up to start removing the water. Blowers, vacuums, de-humidifiers and air filters were used. Disinfectant was applied to the affected areas and mold is not expected to develop. The leak was quickly suppressed Wednesday evening and approximately 750 feet of pipe will be replaced by August 1. Damage estimates are being assessed.

VANDLIA APPLIES FOR EMERGENCY FUNDS

Sunday night's storm that hit Vandalia with six to six and a half inches of rain, high winds, and lighting, caused extensive damage. Mayor Rick Gottman told WGEL the city is working through the county and is applying for financial assistance as a disaster area. Mayor Gottman said so far more than 50 homes are reported to have flood damage and he asks that anyone who has not reported damage please call city hall. He also reported a huge culvert washed out behind Culbertsons Heating and Cooling, two city squad cars were severely damaged from flood waters, the Vandalia Airport reported heavy water backup, Harmon’s market had rooftop heating units blow over and cut a natural gas line, and Rural King had flood and roof damage. Engineers are checking bridges in low lying areas.  Donaldson Carpet, who suffered a disastrous fire earlier this year, had flood damage at their new location but they are currently open.   There will be a meeting at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday to get as full a report of damage as possible to Springfield. Again anyone who has damage in Vandalia is asked to call city hall.

FRAUDULENT PHONE CAMPAIGN WARNING

Madison County Sheriff Robert J. Hertz advises a phone campaign, fraudulently using the name of the Illinois Sheriff’s Association, is currently underway.  The Illinois Sheriff’s Association never solicits by phone.  If contacted, you have the right to ask for the name, address and phone number of the organization for which they are soliciting, the name of the telemarketing firm, the percentage of every dollar paid to the telemarketing firm, and may insist on something in writing to make a pledge or commitment.   If you cannot get answers to these questions, hang up the phone and contact your local law enforcement agency.  Remember, offers too good to be true usually are and never give out your personal information on the phone.  Legitimate telemarketers won’t be turned off if you use these techniques.  They will appreciate dealing with an educated consumer.  It’s not rude, it’s shrewd.
