GLIDER ACCIDENT CLAIMS THE LIFE OF LITCHFIELD MAN

 

Bond County EMS and Sheriff’s deputies responded to a glider down on Doll’s Orchard Road near the intersection with Pokey Road south of Pocahontas just after 8PM Sunday night.  The pilot, 62 year old William Knox of Litchfield, was found dead at the scene.  According to a press release from the Bond County Sheriff’s department Knox had flown out of the Highland airport earlier in the day.  There is no determination as to why the glider crashed and the FAA is also continuing their investigation of the crash site.

FATAL ACCIDENT IN MACOUPIN COUNTY

 

A Carlinville man was fatally injured in a one-vehicle accident in Macoupin County, at 12:40 a.m. Tuesday. According to Illinois State Police, Jared R. Wofford, age 20, of Carlinville, was killed when his 1993 GMC Sonoma pick-up, eastbound on Barnett Road in rural Macoupin County and approaching the single-lane wooden deck bridge at Sugar Creek, left the roadway, struck the bridge railing, went airborne and overturned. Jared R. Wofford was declared dead at the scene by the Macoupin County Coroner. According to State Police, allegedly alcohol use appears to be a contributing factor in the crash and the report says the victim was not wearing a seat belt.  Two passengers in the Sonoma were taken to Carlinville Area Hospital with minor injuries.  State Police and the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the accident.

SPECIAL UNIT 2 SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

 

The Bond County Unit 2 School Board held a special meeting Monday afternoon. The board approved a payment to Tindall Construction, for the new elevator at the high school, in the amount of $45,814.23, to be paid from federal funding for ADA compliance. The elevator will make it possible for people in wheel chairs to have access to all levels at the school. The elevator is projected to be installed and operational by August.

COUNTY BOARD ASKS OFFICE HOLDERS FOR ZERO INCREASE IN BUDGET

 

The Bond County Board met Tuesday morning at the courthouse.  Board members agreed to send a request to countywide office holders to put together a zero increase budget for the next fiscal year.  It was said at the meeting that the budget may even need to be trimmed from last year.  The board will hold a special budget meeting at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 20 prior to the regular meeting at 7:30. 

 

The board also approved the liquor liscense for Hacienda Jalisco and the County and Circuit Clerk's semi-annual reports.

HERITAGE DAYS COMING SOON

 

The 2010 Heritage Days at the American Farm Heritage Museum will be Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 30, 31, and August 1. Ollie Shaefer spoke with WGEL about the events planned for this year. Shaefer said, “On Friday we have the Four Corner Tractorcade which comes in from all four directions. Friday evening we have the draft horse pull and kid's night. On Saturday, we have the tractor pull, field demonstrations, antique fire truck display, and the small engines display. There will be live music all three day and the railroad is complete all the way around and will be running. We have all kinds of vendors coming. There will be women’s tents, activities such as plowing and thrashing and exhibits of steam engines, a baker fan, and saw mill. The little red barn will be open all three days. On Sunday, the church service starts at 8:00 a.m. and the car show will be from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. We will have a lot of activities going on those three days.”  The American Farm Heritage Museum is located south of Greenville on Route 127, just south of I-70.
