FATAL ACCIDENT ON INTERSTATE 70

An accident Saturday morning on Interstate 70 resulted in the death of a 50 year-old man. According to the Illinois State Police, at around 7:05 a.m., Basil Khamis, age 50, of El Cajon, California, driving a 2002 Freightliner and trailer, was stopped and parked on the right shoulder of westbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 44 and was standing on the shoulder of the roadway. A westbound 2009 Freightliner and trailer driven by 55 year-old Thomas Tritt of O’Fallon, Missouri allegedly struck Khamis. According to the accident report, Tritt claims he fell asleep before the accident. Khamis was pronounced dead at the scene. Tritt had minor injuries and was taken to Greenville Regional Hospital. Greenville Firefighters were called to help clean up the scene.

MATER DEI WINS ANOTHER STATE VOLLEYBALL TITLE

The Mater Dei Lady Knights have won another state title in volleyball. They defeated Joliet Catholic Academy Saturday night two sets to one in Class 3A. The Breese Central volleyball team almost won the state championship in Class 2A, but had to settle for second place after losing the championship match to Palos Heights Chicago. In other sports news, the Pana Panthers football season ended with a playoff loss to Carthage, 54-16.

UNDERAGE SMOKING COMPLIANCE

Officer Deb Keserauskis of the Greenville Police Department issued Greenville ’s first retail tobacco sales compliance report and all local tobacco retailers were found in compliance with the new city ordinance, as well as the state law, that prohibits sales of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18. Recently, the city got Illinois grant money to help combat underage tobacco use. The city ordinance goes beyond state law making it a misdemeanor for teens under 18 to use tobacco.

LOOK GOOD…FEEL BETTER PROGRAM SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER

An American Cancer Society “Look Good…Feel Better” program is scheduled for Monday, December 6 from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. in the Greenville Regional Hospital Community Room. Female cancer patients who participate in this class will learn how to use make-up and skin care techniques to overcome the appearance-related effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Norma Marcoot, age 90, of Greenville, passed away Thursday, November 11 at Helia Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be Monday, at 10:00 a.m. at the Greenville First United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Noffsinger Cemetery in rural Pleasant Mound. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home in Greenville. Memorials are suggested to Bond County Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Catherine A. Wessel, age 90, of rural Pierron, passed away Friday, November 12 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland. Funeral services will be Monday, at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pierron. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, at 4:00 p.m. and Monday, from 8:00 to 9:15 a.m. at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Conception Church, St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Paul Education Foundation or the donor’s choice.

John F. Lampe, age 65, of Pierron, passed away Saturday, November 13 at his residence. A memorial service will be Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m. at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
