BOND COUNTY UNIT 2 BOARD OF EDUCATION TO MEET MONDAY

The Bond County Unit 2 Board of Education is scheduled to meet Monday, December 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Greenville Junior High 7th Grade Commons.  On the agenda are the levy adoption, consideration of an overnight trip to Pontiac for junior high boys baseball, principals’ and superintendent’s reports, fiscal year 2010 audit, report of the FFA National Convention, fuel bids, action on board policies, and a closed session.

ILLINOIS UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DOWN AGAIN IN NOVEMBER

According to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the Illinois unemployment rate fell again in November, down two tenths of a percent to 9.6 percent.  IDES Director Maureen O’Donnell said, “Falling unemployment rates, even as more people look for work, is another encouraging sign that the Illinois economy is moving forward.”  The number of unemployed persons was down for the eighth consecutive month, dropping 7,700 to 641,000, the lowest level since April 2009.  Total unemployment has declined 123,800 or 16.2 percent since March 2010 when the state unemployment rate peaked at 11.5 percent.


KASKASKIA COLLEGE INHERITS SHEET MUSIC COLLECTION

Kaskaskia College recently received the sheet music collection of former Hoyleton music lover Martin Henry Struckmeyer, donated by his family.  KC Dean of Arts and Sciences Kellie Henegar said the music will be cataloged and kept in the Kaskaskia College Learning Resource Center where it may be used by district residents.  KC Professor of Music Cliff Jourdan said, “The gift was extremely generous and one that will greatly benefit our students.” Struckmeyer was instrumental in organizing the “Hoyleton Band” that played at area church and community events for nearly forty year.


SHIMKUS TO HEAD NEW SUBCOMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT AND ECONOMY

Congressman John Shimkus has been selected to lead a new subcommittee on environment and economy in the 112th Congress beginning in January.  Shimkus said, “I am proud to accept this position.  I look forward to tackling the challenging issues before us, such as safe water and nuclear waste, which have been priorities of mine for years.”  In addition to the Safe Water Drinking Act and nuclear waste, Shimkus’ subcommittee will have jurisdiction over the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Superfund, toxic substances, noise pollution, and more.


AMVETS POST 140 HAS CHRISTMAS PROGRAMS FOR VETERANS

AMVETS Post 140 recently sponsored a Christmas program for veterans at Helia Healthcare and Fair Oaks Nursing Home.  AMVET member Catherine Burge played the piano and led residents in singing Christmas songs.  Veterans were given gift cards to purchase needed items.  First Vice Commander Tony Koonce said Post 140 has sponsored a Christmas program since 1994 funded by a special foundation grant from Illinois AMVETS.

OBITUARIES

JOSEPH RUNGE

Joseph M. Runge, age 72, of New Douglas, passed away Friday, December 17 at St. Joseph ’s Hospital in Highland. Funeral services will be Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m. at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Friends may call Monday, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family.
