BETHALTO MARINE DIES OF INJURIES FROM AFGHANISTAN

A Bethalto Marine who was seriously injured in Afghanistan earlier this month has died.  The Department of Defense says Lance Corporal Kenneth Corzine died on Christmas Eve.  Corzine lost both legs and an arm to a roadside bomb on December 5th.  He was flown to the National Navy Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where he died from his injuries Friday night.  This was Corzine's first combat mission.


2 ACCIDENTS MONDAY DUE TO ICY ROADS

Severe winter weather, like we had on Christmas Eve, can make its presence felt long after it stops snowing.  The icy road conditions caused two accident Monday morning, one resulting in serious injury.  According to the Bond County Sherriff’s Department, 76 year old Kenneth Escott of Sorento, was traveling on Sorento Road around 10AM Monday when he lost control due to ice on a bridge.  Escott’s vehicle slid through the bridge then left the roadway to the west and struck a utility pole.  Escott was transferred by Bond County EMS to Greenville Regional Hospital with serious injuries. 

In a separate accident around 8:27AM Monday, 18 year old Johnathon Carter of Greenville was traveling on Airport Road near Duddleyville Road, when he lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway.  Carter then struck a ditch and overturned.  The vehicle had to be towed away, but Carter was unhurt.  The officer responding to the scene said he saw a patch of snow/ice where Carter lost control. 


LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATES DOWN FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE MONTH

According to data from the Illinois Department of Employment Security, November unemployment rates fell in every metropolitan area in Illinois for the third consecutive month.  The last time Illinois had three consecutive months of year-over-year declines in every local area was December 2006. 

In the Illinois Section of the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area, November 2010 unemployment was 9.7 percent compared to 10.5 percent in November 2009.  For the same time period, rates in Bond County fell from 9.9 percent to 9.5 percent.  In Clinton County the rate is 7.6 percent down from 8.3 a year ago.  Rates fell in Madison County from 10.4 to 9.3 and in St. Clair County from 11.4 to 10.6 percent. 



POCAHONTAS STUDENTS CONTINUE IN ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM

Pocahontas Center students continue their involvement in the Accelerated Reader Program which encourages student to read books and develops retention skills through tests.  Students work to reach higher point clubs as they progress through the program.  Kayla DeSherlia is in the 300 point club, Crystal Lovsey, Brad Nelson, A.J. Eades, and Taylor Zobrist are members of the 200 point club, and LeAnn Walter and Kaeden Mollett have attained the 150 point club. 



OBITUARIES

NORBERT J. VON HATTEN

Norbert J. Von Hatten, age 78 of Highland, passed away Friday December 24th. Funeral services for 78 year old Norbert Von Hatten will be Wednesday at 8am at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitations will be Tuesday from 4 to 8pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Highland Health Care.

RAYMOND B. “RAY” PINGSTER HAUS

Raymond B. “Ray” Pingsterhaus, age 89 of Beckemeyer, passed away Sunday December 26th at Carlyle Health Care Center. A mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday at 10am at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Beckemeyer. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitations will be Tuesday from 4 to 8pm and Wednesday from 8 to 9:30am at Moss Funeral Home in Breese. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.

ROBERT D. MONDT

Robert D. Mondt,age 65 of Aviston, passed away Saturday December 25th. A funeral mass will be Tuesday at 10am at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitations was held Monday from 4 to 8pm and will be held today from 8 to 9:30am at Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston.
