EDWARDSVILLE WOMAN KILLED IN SNOWMOBILE CRASH

Kelly J. Strohmeier, age 41, of Edwardsville, passed away early Friday morning at Alton Memorial Hospital as the result of a snowmobile accident.  According to Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn, the accident occurred Friday, at 12:17 a.m., in a snow covered farm field along Prairietown Road between Holiday Shores and Prairietown.  Strohmeier’s snowmobile allegedly struck a rut in the field and she was ejected.  She was wearing a helmet and using a headlamp at the time of the accident.  There were no passengers on the snowmobile.  Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated the scene of the accident and there will be routine toxicology testing for the presence of alcohol or drugs.  Funeral arrangements are being handled at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville

FORMER SHERIFF GIVEN TWO LIFE SENTENCES

Former Gallatin County Sheriff Raymond Martin has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences by Judge Phil Gilbert.  Martin was convicted last September for allegedly hiring men to sell marijuana that he stole from the evidence room and for trying to kill one of the dealers who was a witness against him.  Martin denies the accusations of murder and says he was wrongfully convicted.  He is planning to appeal.

SHIMKUS VOTES TO REPEAL HEALTH CARE LAW

Congressman John Shimkus voted for legislation that would repeal the health care law implemented last year.  Shimkus says the new Republican-led Congress is keeping a pledge made to the American people to remove the existing legislation. The original law includes $500 billion in Medicare cuts and establishes many new government agencies. Shimkus said, “Once removed, we can establish a new health care law that removes annual and lifetime caps on insurance policies, prevents restrictions such as pre-existing conditions, and allows for the sale of health insurance across state lines.

TONY BARKER

Tony L. Barker, age 68, of Mulberry Grove, formerly of Greenville, passed away Wednesday, January 19. Funeral services will be Tuesday, at 11:00 a.m. at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. John Swinger, age 47, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Bond County, passed away Wednesday, January 19 at Grant Medical Center.  The Woodyard Company Chapel in Columbus, Ohio is in charge of the arrangements.  Services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home in Columbus, Ohio.

Frances Tonnies, age 99, of Albers, passed away Thursday, January 20. A funeral Mass will be Monday, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Albers. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday, from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. and Monday, from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. at Hempen Funeral Home in Albers.

WALLACE P. “WALLY” SCHRUMPF

Wallace P. “Wally” Schrumpf, age 88, of Highland, passed away Saturday, January 22 at his home.  Private funeral services are planned and no visitation is scheduled.  Burial will be in Highland City Cemetery.  Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland is in charge of arrangements.

Betty M. Andrews, age 87, of Highland, passed away Sunday, January 23 at Faith Care Center in Highland.  Funeral arrangements for 87 year-old Betty Andrews are incomplete at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland.

Glenn A. Huber, age 71, of New Douglas, passed away Friday, January 21 at St. Louis University Hospital.  Funeral services for 71 year-old Glenn Huber will be Friday, at 11:00 a.m. at Dauderman Mortuary in Alhambra.  Burial will be in Salem Cemetery in Alhambra.  Friends may call Thursday, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Friday, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to Metro East Humane Society, Olive Township Fire Department, or to the family.
