ROBERT “ISH” SMITH BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
The Robert “Ish” Smith Classic Baseball Tournament is scheduled for May 14 with games at the Greenville College Robert E. Smith Field and Greenville High School. WGEL spoke with GHS Athletic Director Joe Alstat who said six teams are participating and five of the six have head coaches who played baseball at Greenville College. Alstat said this is the third year the event has been scheduled but the first two years were rained out. He is hopeful for good weather and a great turnout.
Robert “Ish” Smith, for whom the tournament is named, is a former Greenville College head baseball coach, former President of International Baseball, American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame member, Lefty Gomez Award Winner, former President of Greenville College and a resident of Greenville for more than forty years.
The teams invited include the Greenville Comets, Nashville Hornets, Vandalia Vandals, Pinckneyville Panthers, Salem Wildcats and Red Bud Musketeers. Games are scheduled as follows:
At GC’s Robert E. Smith Field
10:00 a.m. – Vandalia vs Red Bud
12:00 p.m. – Red Bud vs Pinckneyville
2:00 p.m. – Vandalia vs Pinckneyville
At GHS Varsity Field
10:00 a.m. – Greenville vs Nashville
12:00 p.m. – Nashville vs Salem
2:00 p.m. – Greenville vs Salem

JERRY A. WILLEFORD
Jerry A. Willeford, age 55, of Quinlan, Texas, formerly of Greenville, passed away Tuesday, May 3 in Dunnigan, California. Memorial services will be at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the family. Young Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
