EAGLE SCOUT PROJECTS AT MONTROSE CEMETERY

Local Boy Scouts Jacob Rommerskirchen and Austin Ulmer are working to attain Eagle Scout status, the highest rank attainable with the Boy Scouts of America.  Only 2% of all Boy Scouts reach the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout and to do so, one of the required criteria is completion of an extensive service project. Both Scouts have chosen the beautification of Montrose Cemetery in Greenville as their service project.  WGEL spoke with Boy Scout Troop 50’s Sandy Kleinik about the boys’ selection of projects. Kleinik said Austin chose landscaping the Abbey because he wants to go into the military and memorializing veterans was something very near and dear to his heart.  Jacob accidentally discovered his project when the two went to the cemetery to scope out Austin’s project.  Jacob likes cemeteries, Kleinik said, along with other old, historical things and he noticed the cemetery gate needed repairing and decided to have his project also support Montrose Cemetery. Kleinik says the boys don’t really want a lot of recognition and local reaction has been a bit overwhelming for them. The areas will be the focus for the Memorial Day ceremony scheduled for Monday, May 30 at 10:00 a.m.

The Bond County Relay For Life event is June 3-4 at the Bond County Fairgrounds with the theme “Celebrating More Birthdays.” The opening ceremony is at 6:00 p.m. Friday, June 3 with a survivor victory lap at 6:55.  The l uminary ceremony at dusk Friday honors survivors and our loved ones who have finished their fight. There will be games, music, food, drinks, bouncy houses, and family fun.  Please bring your lawn chairs and come out to show your support for the Bond County Relay For Life and the fight against cancer.

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER TO PRESENT CLASS AT CARLYLE LAKE

Wildlife photographer Tom James will lead a class on wildlife photography Saturday, June 11 starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center.  Please bring your own SLR digital or film camera and dress appropriately for the weather as time will be allowed following the presentation to take pictures around Carlyle Lake.  There is no fee to attend but the class is limited to forty participants.  Please pre-register by June 10 by calling 618-594-2484.

NINA LYNN BYXBE

Nina Lynn Byxbe, age 91 of Phoenix, Arizona formerly of Mulberry Grove, passed away Saturday, May 28th at a Hospice Care Center in Phoenix. Funeral arrangements for 91 year-old Nina Lynn Byxbe are pending at Donnell- Wiegand Funeral Home in Mulberry Grove.

DORTHA R. KNUTT

Dortha R. Knutt, age 88 of Keyesport, passed away on Friday, May 27th at her residence. Funeral services for 88 year-old, Dortha R. Knutt will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle. Interment will follow at McKendree Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00- 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. until time of service. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or to the Alzheimer’s Association and will be received at the funeral home.

GENEVA CRAWFORD BURDEN

Geneva Crawford Burden, age 99 of Greenville, passed away on Friday, May 27th at Greenville Regional Hospital. Funeral services for 99 year-old Geneva Crawford Burden will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Donnell- Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. Interment will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00- 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Smithgrove Baptist Church.

KENNETH C. FAUKE

Kenneth C. Fauke, age 78 of Carlyle, passed away Friday, May 27th at Carlyle Healthcare Center. Funeral service for 78 year-old Kenneth C. Fauke will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle. Interment will be in Carlyle Cemetery. Friends may call at Zieren Day Funeral Home on Monday from 4:00- 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Memorials are suggested to VNA-TIP Hospice or to the Messiah Lutheran Church Building Fund and will be received at the funeral home.

EDNA HOFFMAN JERNIGAN

Edna Hoffman Jernigan age 78 of Mulberry Grove passed away Sunday the 29th at Fair Oaks.  Funeral services for 78 year old Edna Hoffman Jernigan will be Wednesday at 11AM on June 1st at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville.  Interment will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5 to 7PM on Tuesday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to Fair Oaks or Bond County Hospice.
