FATAL ACCIDENT OVER HOLIDAY WEEKEND
A man was killed and two passengers injured in a single-vehicle accident Saturday, at 2:45 p.m. three miles west of Walshville on Mt. Olive Trail.
Montgomery County Coroner Rick Broaddus reported Shawn P. Durbin, age 33, of Alhambra, was pronounced dead at 4:00 p.m. at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield.
Rick Robbins of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department told WGEL Durbin’s vehicle, a Ford pick-up truck, was eastbound on Mt. Olive Trail when it left the roadway and hit a ditch. Robbins said Durbin and one of the passengers in the vehicle, Dan Kovaly, age 37, of Mt. Olive, were ejected from the truck. A third passenger, Michael Whitworth, age 37, of Alhambra had to be extricated from the vehicle. Kovaly was taken by helicopter to St. Louis University Hospital in critical condition. Whitworth was taken to Staunton Community Hospital and transferred to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
The Illinois State Police have assigned a reconstruction officer to determine the cause and conditions of the accident.

LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT CONTINUES TO DROP
According to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, April unemployment rates dropped in every metropolitan area in Illinois for an unprecedented eighth consecutive month. That has not occurred since this data set was first started in 1976. “But for flood-devastated Alexander County, over-the-year unemployment rates would have fallen in every county in the state for a record fifth straight month,” IDES Acting Director Theresa P. Larkin said. “As communities throughout Illinois continue to recover from the national recession, overall trends indicate that our economy is improving and moving in the right direction.”
Since January 2010, Illinois has added 100,300 new jobs.
