NEW COUNTY REDISTRICTING MAP COULD PUT TWO DEMOCRAT MEMBERS IN SAME DISTRICT

At their Friday meeting, the Committee to redistrict Bond County set up a showdown for a special Monday night meeting by the entire Bond County Board to adopt a new county district map. In that 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 27th special meeting, the board will have four choices, two maps drawn by board chairman Brock Willeford and two drawn by board member Joe Whalen. Willeford’s two maps put Democrat board members Whalen and Frank Lucco in the same district. Whalen’s maps leave both in their current districts. If the board votes to accept one of Willeford’s plans, Lucco or Whalen would have to move or not run for re-election. The committee to redistrict also voted to keep the board at five members. The current board is made up of Republicans Willeford, Tom Devore, and Jack Langel and Democrats Whalen and Lucco.

SEVERE WEATHER IN WAVES OVER THE WEEKEND AND WE ARE NOT DONE YET

It has been a weekend full of watches and warnings from the National Weather Service and the weather is not done with our area yet.  2.74 - 3.34 inches of rain fell in and around Greenville over the weekend and more is likely today.  A stalled out warm front was to blame for the weekend wetness but today it’s a cold front that will move through the area that is likely to cause more rain and possible severe weather.  Flash flooding is a distinct possibility as rain totals continue to rise.  Stay tuned to WGEL Radio for the latest watches and warnings for our area.

POCAHONTAS-OLD RIPLEY HOMECOMING JULY 8-9

The Pocahontas-Old Ripley Volunteer Firemen & EMS Homecoming is Friday and Saturday, July 8-9 at the Gretchen Wilson Park and American Legion Park with food, drinks, games, and more.  The Chapman Brothers Band will play Friday and Rockhouse Band plays Saturday, from 8:00 p.m. until midnight both nights.  The parade Saturday starts at 4:30 p.m., a carnival will be open both nights from 5:00 – 11:00 p.m., and there will be fireworks Saturday starting at 9:10 p.m.  For more information, call 669-2349.

NO WAKE ON GOV BOND LAKE


Excessive rainfall has caused Governor Bond Lake to rise.  Matt Willman, with the city of Greenville, told WGEL the entire lake will be a no wake area today due to the high water levels.  Willman also said the Idler Lane Boat Dock would be the best dock to use to get on the lake.

MILDRED C. “MILLIE” KUPER

Mildred C. "Millie" Kuper, age 80, of Breese, passed away Thursday, June 23 at Breese Nursing Home.  Funeral services will be Monday, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Dominic Church.  Burial will be in St. Dominic-St. Augustine Cemetery.  Friends may call Sunday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Monday, from 8:00 - 9:45 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese.  Memorials are suggested to St. Dominic Church or the Alzheimer's Association.

REVEREND KENDALL P. MAYHEW

Reverend Kendall P. Mayhew, age 98, of Greenville, passed away Sunday, June 26 at Fair Oaks Nursing Home.  Funeral services will be Thursday, at 11:00 a.m. at the Greenville Free Methodist Church.  Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield with full military honors by America Legion Post 282 and VFW Post 1377.  Friends may call Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church.  Memorials are suggested to Bond County Hospice, the Greenville Free Methodist Church or Greenville College.

Katherine Getz, age 91, of Greenville, passed away Sunday, June 26 in New Berg, Indiana. Funeral arrangements for 91 year-old Katherine Getz are incomplete at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville.

DARREL J. OHREN

Darrel J. Ohren, age 75, of New Douglas, passed away Friday, June 24 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.  Funeral arrangements for 75 year-old Darrel J. Ohren are incomplete at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland.

BETHAL CHAPMAN, SR.

Bethal Chapman, Sr., age 89, of Mulberry Grove, passed away Monday, June 20.  Funeral services will be Monday, at 11:00 a.m. at the Greater St. Mark Church of God in Christ, at 4325 State Street, East St. Louis.  Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.  Friends may call Monday, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church.  Serenity Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
