DEDICATION OF “FRANK WATSON PARKWAY”

Emotions ran high Tuesday morning during the ceremony to dedicate a portion of Interstate 70 to former Senator Frank Watson. After the event, WGEL spoke with Watson who said it was a very good day for him and he appreciated the honor very much. He thanked both Senator Kyle McCarter and Representative Ron Stephens who sponsored the resolution to name the highway for him.  Watson said the event was heartwarming but he was not sure he was worth the honor.

The event began with opening comments by Reverend Darrel Bolen.  Representative Ron Stephens spoke about Watson in very emotional terms and Watson also was emotional during the ceremony when he spoke of constituents who thanked him for changing their lives and when he introduced his wife who has been beside him with loving support throughout his entire career.

Frank Watson served in both the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate during the years 1978 - 2008, when he retired.

FIRST ILLINOIS MONEY BOX AND PAN SCALES ON DISPLAY IN VANDALIA

Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford will be at the Vandalia Statehouse Wednesday, July 20 displaying the Illinois treasurer’s money storage box and pan scales from 1818.  You may see the money box and scales from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on the first floor of the Vandalia Statehouse. 

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CANCELS PICNIC DUE TO HEAT

The First Presbyterian Church in Greenville has canceled their planned worship and picnic in the park for Sunday, July 24 due to the projected extreme heat.

PSYCHIATRIST AND THERAPIST JOIN STAFF OF GREENVILLE FAMILY WELLNESS CENTER

According to Greenville Regional Hospital President and CEO Bill Bruce, psychiatrist Stacy Neff and therapist Julie Reuter are joining the staff at the Greenville Family Wellness Center.  Dr. Neff most recently served as a psychiatrist at the Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation in Alton and Julie Reuter has served as a licensed clinical social worker in Centralia.  New counseling and psychiatry patients are being accepted.  For information on behavioral health services at the Greenville Family Wellness Center, call 618-664-2922.

Jeanette Graham

Jeanette Graham, age 95, of Highland, passed away Monday, July 18 at Faith Care Center/ Faith Countryside Home in Highland. Funeral arrangements for 95 year-old Jeanette Graham are pending at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland.

Nelda L. Hopkins

Nelda L. Hopkins, age 92, of Mulberry Grove, passed away Monday, July 18 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.  Funeral services will be Saturday, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mulberry Grove First Baptist Church.  Burial will be in Taylor Cemetery.  Friends may call Friday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church.  Memorials are suggested to the Mulberry Grove First Baptist Church. The Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas E. Crawford

Thomas E. Crawford, Sr., age 71, of Highland, passed away Saturday, July 16 at the Hospice of Southern Illinois home in Edwardsville.  Graveside services will be Thursday, at 10:00 a.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
