BOND COUNTY STATE’S ATTORNEY SEEKS JUDGE POSITION
Bond County State’s Attorney Chris Bauer is one of twelve candidates for the Associate Judge position in the Third Judicial District. Circuit Judges and Associate Judges are selected by different methods. WGEL spoke with Bauer who said, at the circuit level in Illinois, there are two levels of judges, the Circuit Judges and the Associate Judges. The Circuit Judges are elected by the voting public and the Associate Judges are appointed by a vote among the Circuit Judges. The Third Circuit consists of Madison and Bond counties and Bond County has one resident Circuit Judge but there are other Circuit Judges in Bond and Madison counties elected by the electorate.
Associate Judges are approved by retention vote by the Circuit Judges for four-year terms. That retention vote was in May of this year and Judge Ellar Duff was not retained causing the vacancy.
Bauer said, at this point the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, an arm of the Supreme Court, has mailed ballots to each of the nine Circuit Judges in the Third Circuit with the names of the twelve applicants. After tallying the results, the announcement will come from the AOIC.
Bauer is a 1986 graduate of Greenville High School and a graduate of St. Louis University Law School in 1993. He was in private practice for four years and served as the Assistant State’s Attorney for three years prior to his election at Bond County State's Attorney in 2000.
