FATALITY IN GIRARD DUE TO HOME EXPLOSION

A home explosion and fire early Thursday morning in Girard, Illinois, in Macoupin County, resulted in one fatality.  According to information from the Macoupin County Coroner’s office, Girard Firefighters responded Thursday, at 1:38 a.m., to a house explosion and fire on Fairway Drive in Girard.  Thomas M. Barnard, age 87, lived alone in the home.  His body was found in the home and Macoupin County Coroner Brad Targhetta pronounced him dead at 2:45 a.m. from injuries received during the explosion and fire.  The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Girard Fire Department continue to investigate the cause of the explosion and fire.

AUGUST DRIEST MONTH THIS YEAR IN GREENVILLE

August is the driest month so far this year with 1.79 inches recorded in Greenville.  When compared with records from the past 44 years, August 2011 ranks tenth driest with no rain recorded in August 1971.  The most rain in August was in 1977 with 6.9 inches.



KASKASKIA COLLEGE OFFERS AQUA ZUMBA CLASS

Kaskaskia College is offering an "Aqua Zumba" class at the Greenville College Fitness Center swimming pool Thursday evenings beginning September 1 and ending November 17 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aqua Zumba is a fun water-based workout that integrates the Zumba formula and philosophy into traditional aqua fitness disciplines. A $3.00 per class pool fee will be collected by Greenville College at the pool for all students who are not currently pass holders.  The course fee is $50.00 for students under age 60 and free to students over 60.  For more information or to register, call the Greenville Education Center at 664-9394.


2011 ANNBRIAR CLASSIC GOLF TO BENEFIT SPECIAL OLYMPICS ILLINOIS

Golfers will take a swing Saturday, September 24 in the inaugural Annbriar Fall Classic, at Annbriar golf course in Waterloo, to raise funds for Special Olympics Illinois.  The entry fee is $500.00 per team of four which includes green and cart fees, dinner, three drink tickets, and free range golf balls.  The event begins with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.  Special Olympics is seeking sponsors, golfers, and donations for this event.  For more information, call Linda at 618-654-6680.



OBITUARIES

Esther H. Baumann

Esther H. Baumann, age 93, of Highland, passed away Wednesday, August 31 at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Highland.  Funeral services will be Saturday, at 11:00 a.m. at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland.  Burial will be at Highland City Cemetery.  Friends may call Friday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland and Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church.  Memorials are suggested to Highland Home or to the Evangelical United Church of Christ.

Tune into Public Affairs this a Sunday following the Noon Bond County Area News on WGEL Radio.  This week will feature the full interview with Craig Baumberger about his experiences during September 11th 2001.  Craig was a pilot flying for American Airlines and was in the process of taking off when the news of the attack reached him and his coworkers.  It’s the first of two Public Affairs programs focused on the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks.  Next Sunday will feature the stories shared by WGEL listeners about what they were doing and their remembrances of that fateful day.
