COMETS END REGULAR SEASON PERFECT, SET FOR SATURDAY PLAYOFF GAME

The Greenville Comets football ended their perfect regular season on Friday night by defeating Vandalia 41 to 31. The Comets enter the playoffs ranked 1st in their quadrant with the record 9-0. They will play the 5-4 Robinson Maroons at home in the first round of playoffs this Saturday October 29th at 1pm at Don Stout field in Greenville.  Looking ahead, if the Comets defeat Robinson, the second round will be a conference match-up. The Comets will play the winner of the Vandalia vs. Pana game that will be played in Vandalia.

WINTER WEATHER FORECAST

This summer and fall, we have seen below average rainfall.  We spoke with Meteorologist Gary Schmocker from the National Weather Service about what we might be able to expect this winter. Schmocker said we can expect above average temperatures with below normal precipitation in November.  This reflects the pattern we have seen for the past few months.  Temperatures in the winter months of December, January, and February should remain pretty close to average, however we might see slightly above average levels of precipitation. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, we can expect to see average temperatures this year, accompanied by lots of wet snow as early as Halloween.

CHILDREN MAY TRICK-OR-TREAT AT GREENVILLE COLLEGE

Greenville College invites children to visit the campus Halloween day, Monday, October 31 from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. to trick-or-treat.  Residence halls will be decorated and candy will be provided.  Participating halls include Mannoia, Joy, Janssen, West Oak, and Burritt Halls.  Parents are asked to accompany their children.

LTD FORD TO DONATE CAR TO VETERANS TRIBUTE PROJECT

LTD Ford in Centralia is donating a vehicle to the Veterans Tribute Project at Kaskaskia College as part of the organization’s fund raising efforts.  The Veterans Tribute will recognize veterans from Bond, Clinton, Fayette, Marion, and Washington Counties who have served, or are currently serving, in the armed forces.

BECOME A MASTER GARDENER

Lawn and garden enthusiasts may get extensive horticulture training in exchange for volunteer hours through the University of Illinois Extension’s Master Gardener program.  Training is weekly from January through April, in three locations.  Classes meet Tuesdays on a rotating basis between Edwardsville, Belleville, and Waterloo.  Wednesday classes are in Effingham and Thursday classes in Benton.  All classes are from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  The registration fee is $200.00.  For more information or an application packet, call the Bond County U of I Extension office at 664-3665

Audrey M. Terrill Hunt

Audrey M. Terrill Hunt, age 77, of Pocahontas, passed away Friday, October 21.  A private memorial service is planned.  Burial will be in Salem Cemetery in Alhambra.  Friends may call Wednesday, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Meridith Funeral Home in Highland.  Memorials are suggested to BJC Hospice.

Blanche C. Becker

Blanche C. Becker, age 82, of Bartelso, passed away Friday, October 21 at Breese Nursing Home. A funeral Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Bartelso. Interment will be in St. Cecilia Cemetery. Friends may call Monday, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Moss Funeral Home in Germantown. Memorials are suggested to St. Cecilia Church.

Donald R. "Donny" Maine

Donald R. “Donny” Maine, age 70, of Alhambra, passed away Saturday, October 22 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m. at Dauderman Mortuary in Alhambra. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery in Alhambra. Friends may call Tuesday, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, from 8:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Edna Raymond Metzger

Edna Raymond Metzger, age 97, of Highland, passed away Wednesday, October 19.  Funeral services are today at noon at the Meridith Funeral Home in Highland.  Burial will be in Highland City Cemetery.  Friends may call today from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mary V. Strubhart, age 93, of Aviston, passed away Saturday, October 22. A funeral Mass will be Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. at Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston.
