RAILROAD TIE FIRE IN SMITHBORO

Smithboro Firefighters responded Monday, at 1:00 p.m., to a report of railroad ties on fire on the Burlington-Northern tracks on the east side of Main Street in Smithboro.  According to Fire Chief Dale Deverick, a single tie was burning in the center of the tracks about 200 yards south of the Main Street crossing on the south side of Smithboro.  Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and notified Burlington-Northern.  The cause of the fire is unknown and there was minor damage to the tie.


BOND COUNTY BOARD MEETING TUESDAY NIGHT

The Bond County Board will have two meetings tonight.  The first will be a special meeting at 6:45 p.m. regarding the special services district.  The regular meeting should convene at 7:00.  County assessments are again on the agenda along with the Seagraves Cemetery issue which is nearing a resolution.  Other items on the agenda include county health insurance and an executive session.  Tune to WGEL Radio for post meeting coverage of the Bond County Board meetings. 


GREAT WEEKEND FOR GREENVILLE COMETS

It was a great weekend for Comets and their fans.  In addition to the round one football playoff victory, two Comet sophomores advanced to the state cross country championships scheduled for next Saturday. Jordie File, competing in the 137 girls’ competition completed the hilly 5K course at SIUE to win a 10th place medal. Reid Rinella, the current South Central Conference champion in boys’ cross country earned a sixth place medal out of 158 competitors. The Comets Marching Band received Outstanding High School Drum Major, Outstanding High School Drum Line and First Place overall for high school bands in the 85th Annual Centralia Halloween Parade last Saturday. Congratulations to all the Comets on their performance awards and victories.


SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR IN MULBERRY GROVE

The Scholastic Book Fair at Mulberry Grove School is November 14-17 in the district library. Librarian Virginia Schoene said people have the option of shopping online this year.  You may log onto www.scholastic.com/schoolbookfairs and shop 24 hours a day7 days a week from November 14-28.  The book fair in the library will be open from 7:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. and will also be open for Family Reading Night November 15, from 6:30 - 8:15 p.m.  The book fair is open to the public.

ALHAMBRA STRONGMAN PREPARES FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Mike Sidwell, of Godfrey, an Alhambra native, is in training for the 2011 North American Strongman Championship November 4-5 in Tunica, Mississippi.  Sidwell, who is a power lifter in the 175 lb. class, will compete in a number of events including a 200 lb. log clean and press, a 650 lb. 80 ft. yoke walk, a farmer’s walk, and car dead lift in which the contestant will lift the back end of a car, similar to a Ford Focus and do as many lifts as possible in one minute. The championship is sponsored by North American Strongman, Inc., the premier amateur strongman corporation in the world.

LA RUSSA RETIRES AS CARDINALS MANAGER

Fresh from his third World Series title, the second with the Cardinals, manager Tony La Russa announced his retirement Monday after 33 seasons as a big league manager, including the past 16 seasons with St. Louis, that’s according to the St. Louis Cardinals website.   The announcement was made during a Monday morning news conference at Busch Stadium. La Russa, age 67, ranks third in baseball history in managerial victories with 2,728. More than half of his victories, 1,408, have come while in a St. Louis uniform, making him the franchise's winningest manager.  The Cardinals skipper is also the only manager in Major League Baseball history to win multiple pennants in both leagues and the second to win a World Series title in each. La Russa's Oakland A's won the World Series in 1989.

Joann Lester

Joann Lester, age 64, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Breese, passed away Saturday, October 29.  A funeral Mass will be Friday, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese.  Burial will be in St. Dominic / St. Augustine Cemetery in Breese.  Friends may call Thursday, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and Friday, from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. at the Hempen Funeral Home in Breese.

LaDonna Monroe

LaDonna Monroe passed away Tuesday, October 25.  Funeral services are Tuesday, at 11:00 a.m. at the Willing Workers Church at 2570 Waverly, in East St. Louis.  Burial will be in Sunset Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Millstadt.  Friends may call Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church.  Serenity Memorial Gardens in Belleville is in charge of arrangements.

Theresa A. Sautman

Theresa A. Sautman, age 86, of Carlyle, passed away Monday, October 31 at Carlyle Healthcare Center.  Funeral arrangements for 86 year-old Theresa A. Sautman are incomplete at Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle.
