FIRE AT SMURFT-STONE BUILDING IN HIGHLAND

Highland Firefighters responded Monday, at 6:28 p.m., to a fire alarm at the Smurft Stone building on Zschokke Street in Highland.  According to Fire Chief Kerry Federer, employees had extinguished the fire when firefighters arrived.  The fire was in a circuit box and damage was limited to burned wires and smoke in the building.  Employees evacuated the building and firefighters checked to be sure the fire had not spread to any other area.  The cause was determined to be electrical and may have been due to old wiring.  No injuries were reported and firefighters were on the scene about fifteen minutes.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ENDS THIS WEEKEND

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 6 and that means it is time to “Fall Back.”  Be sure you set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday, November 5.  Many digital clocks and devices are automatically programmed to adjust this for you, so consult your clock or device manual to see whether you need to manually change it. Fire departments recommend that when you change your clocks, you also change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE FIRING RANGES AVAILABLE TO DEER HUNTERS

Illinois State Police firing ranges will be open November 12 to hunters for sighting in and test-firing shotguns in a safe environment for the upcoming deer hunting season.  Firing ranges in Joliet, Pawnee, LaSalle, Macomb, and Pittsfield will be available from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Targets will be provided and there is no charge.  You must have a valid FOID card and transport the firearm legally.  You are asked to call the range to make a reservation.  Check the website www.isp.state.il.us for a list of ranges and phone numbers.

E. Clinton Barnhart

E. Clinton Barnhart, age 81, of Raymond, formerly of Hillsboro, passed away Monday, October 31 at St. Francis Hospital.  Funeral services will be Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at the Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Waveland Cemetery.  Friends may call Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. 

Kathleen P. Moran

Kathleen P. Moran, age 61, of Trenton, passed away Monday, October 31 at her home.  Funeral services will be Saturday, at 3:00 p.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ.  There will be no burial.  Friends may call Saturday, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the church.  Memorials are suggested to the Land of Lincoln Legal Foundation.

Marie R. Brefeld

Marie R. Brefeld, age 96, of Trenton, passed away Tuesday, November 1 at Aviston Countryside Manor.  A funeral Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Trenton.  Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.  Friends may call Friday, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, from 8:00 - 8:45 a.m. at the Moss Funeral Home in Trenton.  Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Ross Licare, Jr.

Ross Licare, Jr., age 86, of Boulder, passed away Monday, October 31 at St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia.  Funeral services will be Friday, at 2:00 p.m. with military honors at the Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle.  There will be no burial.  Friends may call Friday, from noon until service time at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

Theresa A. Sautman 

Theresa A. Sautman, age 86, of Carlyle, passed away Monday, October 31 at Carlyle Healthcare Center.  A Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Friends may call Friday, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. at the Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle.  Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Hospice.

Willard B. Perkins, Sr.

Willard B. Perkins, Sr., age 87, of Pocahontas, passed away Monday, October 31 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland.  Funeral services will be Thursday, at 11:00 a.m. at the Meridith Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Hug Cemetery in Millersburg.  Friends may call Wednesday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
