NEW DIRECTOR FOR U OF I EXTENSION

The University of Illinois Extension for Bond, Clinton, Jefferson, Marion, and Washington Counties has a new director.  New Director Lisa Wait, originally from St. Louis, said seventeen years ago she moved south of Carbondale to a town called Makanda, Illinois.  Lisa has worked with various not-for-profit and volunteer organizations such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and the American Red Cross.  Previously, she worked with wilderness and experiential education.  Wait has been working in administration for around 25 years and is very excited to be the U of I Extension director.  Lisa finds the programs in which the Extension participates are very valuable and she loves the fact that she will be able to work with such a wide range of individuals.

BOND COUNTY HEALTH DEPT STILL HAS FLU VACCINATIONS

The Bond County Health Department still has flu vaccinations available.  We spoke with Clinical Coordinator, Penny Dixon who said one of the benefits of getting a flu vaccine is protecting the ones you love.  A six month-old infant cannot receive the flu vaccine, however, if the child’s mother and father get the immunization, they are protecting their child from getting sick.  During most flu seasons which typically run from November to April, 10-20% of the US population is infected with influenza viruses.  Adults may be vaccinated any time during health department office hours for $30.00.  Child vaccines cost $9.00 and should be scheduled by calling 664-1442.

LOCAL SALVATION ARMY DONATIONS

Are you looking for a way to help families in our area this Holiday Season?  We spoke with Wayne Pierce of the Salvation Army about an easy way for you to help people in our community. Wayne said it is time to raise money for the Bond County Salvation Army.  They will begin this year at five locations in Greenville.  The Mulberry Grove American Legion and the Pocahontas Fire Department will be ringing bells in their community. Recently, you may have received a letter in the mail asking for a donation to the Salvation Army.  Although this is good, it does not go to the local Bond County collection and our local needs.  If you would like to contribute by mail, send your donation to Frank Joy at the Bradford National Bank.  The Salvation Army is always looking for bell ringers.  It takes more than 500 people each year to ring the bells.  If you would like to help, call Wayne at 664-3434.  Last year, the Salvation Army bell-ringers raised more than $20,000.00.
