RELAY FOR LIFE KICKOFF EVENT A SUCCESS

The Bond County Relay for Life kickoff event was Tuesday, January 17.  Jennifer Lappe said twelve teams registered at the kick-off event to participate in the 2012 Relay for Life June 1.  Ten booths had information explaining online registration, survivors registration, and mission.  Snacks were available and the event was a great success with a good attendance. They will continue to accept team registrations at half price, $50.00, until their next meeting, February 13.  There is a team captain's meeting February 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Reception Hall Room of the First Christian Church in Greenville.  If you would like more information about the Relay for Life, or how to sign up your team, call Patti Brooks at 960-4789.

PRISONER ATTEMPTS TO ESCAPE IN HILLSBORO AND FAILS

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman Stacey Solano, Aaron Ware, a 28 year-old inmate who was previously being held at Graham Correctional facility in Hillsboro, recently attempted to escape from prison.  Ware was five months into a two-year sentence for committing theft in St. Clair County, when he attempted to escape from a vehicle as he was being transported.  Ware is currently in custody and the incident is still under investigation.


PETIT JURY CANCELED JANUARY 23

According to Circuit Clerk Rex Catron, the Petit Jury scheduled for Monday, January 23 is canceled.

KEVIN KAEGY TO SPEAK AT FAYETTE COUNTY MUSEUM CIVIL WAR PROGRAM

Sunday, January 22, the Fayette County Museum fund raiser event will feature a presentation by Greenville native Kevin Kaegy.  The event is at the Methodist Church in Vandalia, starting at 2:00 p.m. In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Kevin will speak about the organization and history of the 130th Illinois infantry, our local unit. We had more than 200 men serving in that particular unit.  Through letters, diary accounts, and history of several events, Kevin will trace the history of that unit over the four-year period they served in the American Civil War.  Some artifacts will be on display.  Tickets for the program are $15.00 at the door, $13.00 in advance, and children high school age and under are half price.  If you have any questions, call the museum at 283-4866.


MISS BOND COUNTY TO COMPETE IN 2012 MISS ILLINOIS COUNTY FAIR PAGEANT

This weekend, 70 young women are competing in the 2012 Miss Illinois County Fair Pageant in Springfield.  Bond County Fair Queen Katie Maurer will represent Bond County.  Bond County Queen Pageant Director Brooke Earnest said this weekend is the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs Convention and the Miss Illinois County Fair Queen Pageant is in conjunction with the convention. The pageant starts Thursday and ends Sunday. Katie will compete in the interview portion of the pageant Friday and the speech, business suit, evening gown, and swimsuit events Saturday.  The final grand march is Saturday evening.  At the banquet Sunday, the Top 15 and non-finalist awards will be presented and finally the announcement of the 2012 Miss Illinois County Fair.



OBITUARIES

Irene Simmons

Irene Simmons, age 87, of Greenville, formerly of Litchfield, passed away Sunday, January 15.  Graveside services will be Saturday, at 1:00 p.m. at Cedar Ridge Cemetery at Honey Bend.  There will be no visitation.  The Perfetti Funeral Home in Panama is in charge of the arrangements.
