SENATOR MARK KIRK HOSPITALIZED FOR STROKE

Illinois Senator Mark Kirk suffered a stroke over the weekend.  A spokesperson for Senator Kirk released a statement saying he checked himself into Lake Forest Hospital where doctors discovered a carotid artery dissection in the right side of his neck.  He was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago where further tests revealed a stroke. Early Monday morning, the Senator underwent surgery to relieve swelling around his brain.  The surgery was successful.  Doctors are very confident the Senator will recover.


2011-2012 ILLINOIS DEER HARVEST TOTALS

Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 181,411 deer during all 2011-2012 seasons ending January 15.  This number is slightly less than the 2010-2011 total of 182,270.  50.8 percent of deer killed this year were bucks.  The record season in Illinois was 2005-2006 when more than 201 thousand deer were harvested.  Totals in Bond and surrounding counties show Bond County with 1337, Clinton 1347, Fayette 3181, Madison 2225, Montgomery 2068, and St. Clair 1737.


HIGHLAND-PIERRON FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO VEHICLE FIRE

Highland-Pierron Firefighters were dispatched Saturday, January 21, at 6:54 p.m., to a report of a vehicle fire on Interstate 70.  According to Fire Chief Steve Plocher, the car was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.  The cause was undetermined but was probably electrical from under the dash area.  The car was a total loss.  No injuries were reported and firefighters were on the scene about 20 minutes.


MULBERRY GROVE AMERICAN LEGION SPONSORS BLOOD DRIVE

The Mulberry Grove American Legion Post 1180 sponsored an American Red Cross blood drive Thursday, January 19.  Twenty-seven persons registered with 22 units collected.  Doris Pruitt received a 20-gallon pin, Jimmie Rice a 19-gallon pin, Richard Hosto a 12-gallon pin, Dwight Volkmar a 10-gallon pin, Mariann Lieb a 7-gallon pin, Jane Ponder a 2-gallon pin, and Karen Weiner a 1-gallon pin.  Kevin Darst received a blood-drop pin as a first-time donor.

SHOAL CREEK WHITETAILS UNLIMITED BANQUET

The 7th annual banquet for the Shoal Creek Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited is Saturday, February 4 at the Highland KC Hall starting at 5:00 p.m.  Greg Zykan said there will be games and a social hour starting at 5:00 along with a two-meat buffet.  The cost is $40.00 for a single ticket, $20.00 for spouses, and $15.00 for children age 15 and under.  This price includes all beverages.  Zykan told WGEL the banquet is always fun and 50% of the net proceeds go right back into the community to fund conservation related activities.  If you have any questions regarding the banquet, call Greg at 664-9735.

Herman Kollmann, age 93, of Albers, passed away Monday, January 23.  A funeral Mass will be Thursday, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Albers.  Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery with full military honors.  Friends may call Wednesday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. at the Hempen Funeral Home in Albers.

Ira S. Oglesby, Sr.

Ira S. Oglesby, Sr., age 80, formerly of Greenville, passed away Sunday, January 22 at Vandalia Rehabilitation Center.  Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m., at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville.  Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery with military honors.  Friends may call Tuesday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to Vandalia Rehab or the Parkinson Foundation.

Juanita Waggoner, age 64, of Greenville, passed away Monday, January 23 at Helia Healthcare.  Funeral services for 64 year-old Juanita Waggoner will be Thursday, at 11:00 a.m., at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland.  Burial will be in Mt.
