COMETS TO PLAY AT BUSCH STADIUM

Many baseball players dream of getting to walk out onto the field at Busch stadium.  This year, the Comets will get a chance to not only walk out onto the field, but to play as well.  Greenville High School Athletic Director Joe Alstat said the Greenville Comet baseball team will be playing their first ever game at Busch Stadium Sunday, April 15, following a game between the Cardinals and the Cubs. The Cardinals and the Cubs play at 1:15 p.m. and the Greenville Comets will play Edwardsville immediately after. Tickets are available for $30.00.  The face-value of these tickets is $48.00, nearly a $20.00 discount. For more information or to order tickets, call 664-5580.

6TH BOND COUNTY HABITAT HOME IS FINISHED

The Bond County Habitat for Humanity sixth home presentation was Thursday evening in Pocahontas.  The clouds and colder temperatures did not keep dozens from gathering as the new home was presented to the Hibbs Family.  Habitat director Ben Kettlekamp thanked the many volunteers and companies who helped make the home a reality.  The Hibbs family also thanked all the volunteers.  Everyone in attendance had an opportunity to tour the finished home.  Habitat for Humanity has several fund raising events throughout the year and anyone interested in donating time, money, or materials is encouraged to contact Kettlekamp at 580-6710.

ACCIDENT WITH INJURIES ON INTERSTATE 70

Illinois State Police and Bond County EMS responded Thursday, at 7:53 a.m., to the scene of a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 70.  According to information from the Illinois State Police, Jacob A. Shumaker, age 22, of Altamont, was westbound in a GMC Sierra pickup truck at mile marker 41, when he lost control of his truck on the rain-slickened road.  His truck ran off the road to the left, traveled down the median, crossed the railroad tracks, and struck a concrete bridge support on the I-70 overpass.  Greenville Firefighters were called to the scene to provide assistance with special equipment and lifting the victim.  Bond County EMS took Shumaker to Greenville Regional Hospital for treatment.  Shumaker was cited for alleged failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Cornelius J. “Dick” Richter

Cornelius J. “Dick” Richter, age 82, of Aviston, passed away Saturday, January 28.  A funeral Mass will be Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston.  Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery with full military honors.  Friends may call Tuesday, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. at the Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston.

Edwin G. Gerling

Edwin G. Gerling, age 86, of Highland, passed away Thursday, January 26 at his home.  Funeral services will be Monday, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Highland.  Burial will be in Highland City Cemetery.  Friends may call Sunday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral home in Highland and Monday, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church.  Memorials are suggested to the First Congregational Church, Hospice of Southern Illinois, or to the Everett Genealogy Room at the Louis Latzer Memorial Public Library.

Florence C. Margaret I. Castleman

Margaret I. Castleman, age 73, of Woburn, passed away Friday, January 27 at Greenville Regional Hospital.  Funeral services will be Monday, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mulberry Grove Church of Christ.  Burial will be in Mulberry Grove Cemetery.  Friends may call Sunday, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville.  Memorials are suggested to her church.

Nora G. Speckman

Nora G. Speckman, age 92, of Ottawa, formerly of Hamel, passed away Friday, January 27 at Peasant View Lutheran Home in Ottawa.  Funeral services will be Saturday, at 11:00 a.m. at Dauderman Mortuary in Hamel.  Burial will be in Immanuel UCC Cemetery in Hamel.  Friends may call Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the Immanuel United Church of Christ Cemetery.
