LENTEN LUNCHEON SERVICES

The Bond County Ministerial Alliance’s Lenten Luncheon Services are scheduled at various churches in Bond County during Lent.  President of the Bond County Ministerial Alliance Carl Brannon said for a number of years, the churches have gathered together for a noon service and luncheon.  Each service follows a particular theme and services are every Wednesday except for the last week when the service is on Good Friday.  An offering is taken to help the Ministerial Alliance Benevolence Fund.  This fund helps people throughout the year with utilities and other needs.  It is a time for churches to gather together, share a meal, and extend help to the community through the offerings.  The next Lenten Luncheon SErvice is Wednesday, March 7 at the Greenville Free Methodist Church.

The 2012 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge raised a record amount of money Saturday, February 25 at Carlyle Lake.  Peggy Knebel of the Special Olympics said the event was fantastic.  The weather was fairly good, with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 40’s.  Approximately 440 people took the plunge and they raised approximately $118,000.00 to help the 1,100 Special Olympics athletes in area 12 to go to sporting events at no cost to them.  Knebel told WGEL they had an excellent group of volunteers who made the day possible.  For more information, call 654-6680.

REPRESENTATIVE CAVALETTO INTRODUCES TERM LIMIT LEGISLATION

General Assembly members and executive branch office holders would be limited to a set number of terms if a constitutional amendment introduced by State Representative John Cavaletto is enacted.  “When the same people continue to serve for decades, ideas tend to get stale,” said Cavaletto.  Constitutional amendment 35 would limit state representatives and senators to no more than twelve years and an executive branch officer to no more than three consecutive terms in the same office.  It would become effective upon being declared adopted and apply to the election of General Assembly members beginning with the first general election after that date.  Cavaletto commented, “Some politicians stay on the shelf long past their expiration date.  By bringing in new individuals, maybe we can get some new proposals on how to fix the state’s problems.”  Amendment 35 is currently in the House Rules Committee.
